Golf Handicap & Net Score Calculator
Use this tool to calculate score differential, course handicap, playing handicap, and net score using common World Handicap System (WHS) formulas.
What this golf calculator helps you do
Golf scoring can get confusing when you move from raw score to handicap-adjusted performance. This golf calculator simplifies the most common numbers players care about: score differential, course handicap, playing handicap, and net score.
If you are tracking improvement, competing in weekend games, or preparing for tournament play, these numbers give context beyond a single gross score.
How the formulas work
1) Score Differential
Score differential is a way to compare rounds played on different courses and conditions.
Formula used:
Score Differential = (113 / Slope Rating) × (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating)
Lower differentials generally indicate stronger play. A differential near scratch level is excellent for most amateur golfers.
2) Course Handicap
Your Handicap Index becomes a Course Handicap based on course difficulty.
Formula used:
Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating / 113) + (Course Rating − Par)
This value is rounded to the nearest whole number.
3) Playing Handicap and Net Score
In many formats, a handicap allowance is applied (for example, 95% in some competitions).
Formula used:
Playing Handicap = Course Handicap × (Allowance / 100)
Then:
Net Score = Adjusted Gross Score − Playing Handicap
Quick example
- Adjusted Gross Score: 92
- Course Rating: 71.8
- Slope Rating: 128
- Par: 72
- Handicap Index: 12.4
With those numbers, your differential and net scoring become much easier to interpret than raw score alone. This is especially useful when comparing rounds from different tees or courses.
Tips for better accuracy
- Use adjusted gross score (not just raw strokes) when possible.
- Confirm rating and slope from the exact tees you played.
- Use the right allowance for your game format.
- Track rounds over time to identify trends in scoring consistency.
Frequently asked questions
Does this replace an official handicap service?
No. This calculator is a practical guide and training tool. Official handicap records should still come from your recognized handicap provider.
Can beginners use this?
Absolutely. New golfers can use this calculator to understand how course difficulty affects scoring and to build better performance benchmarks.
Why include allowance percentage?
Different events apply different handicap percentages. Including allowance helps you model your score accurately for match play, team formats, and local competition rules.
