Free Golf Handicap Calculator

Enter your most recent rounds to estimate a World Handicap System (WHS) Handicap Index. You need at least 3 complete score entries.

What this golf hcp calculator does

This golf handicap calculator helps you estimate your Handicap Index using the core WHS method: calculate score differentials for each round, sort from lowest to highest, then average a set of the lowest differentials based on how many rounds you entered.

If you are looking for a quick and practical tool to track your progress, this gives you a strong estimate you can use for planning practice, setting goals, and comparing trends over time.

How the handicap formula works

Step 1: Calculate each score differential

For each valid round, the calculator uses:

  • Adjusted Gross Score (your adjusted round score)
  • Course Rating (difficulty for a scratch golfer)
  • Slope Rating (relative difficulty for a bogey golfer)

Differential formula: (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating) × 113 ÷ Slope Rating

Step 2: Use the correct number of low differentials

The number of differentials included depends on how many rounds you provide:

  • 3 scores: lowest 1, minus 2.0
  • 4 scores: lowest 1, minus 1.0
  • 5 scores: lowest 1
  • 6 scores: average lowest 2, minus 1.0
  • 7–8 scores: average lowest 2
  • 9–11 scores: average lowest 3
  • 12–14 scores: average lowest 4
  • 15–16 scores: average lowest 5
  • 17–18 scores: average lowest 6
  • 19 scores: average lowest 7
  • 20 scores: average lowest 8

Tips for accurate results

  • Use adjusted scores, not raw scores with blow-up holes unadjusted.
  • Double-check course rating and slope from the exact tees you played.
  • Enter your most recent rounds first and update often.
  • Use at least 8 to 20 rounds when possible for a more stable handicap estimate.

Example use case

Let’s say you enter 8 rounds. The calculator finds the 2 lowest score differentials and averages them. That average becomes your estimated Handicap Index. If your game is improving, you will often see lower differentials appear in that selected set.

Common questions

Is this an official GHIN handicap?

No. This is an educational and planning tool. Official handicap records still need approved posting through your authorized handicap provider or club.

Why can my estimate differ from my official index?

Official systems may apply additional adjustments (for example PCC, exceptional score reductions, or local posting rules). This calculator intentionally focuses on the standard differential method for clarity and speed.

Can I use fewer than 20 rounds?

Yes. WHS supports calculations starting at 3 rounds. More rounds generally means a more reliable number.

Final thoughts

A handicap index is not just a label—it is feedback. Use this golf handicap calculator to track changes in ball striking, scoring consistency, and course management. Keep your data clean, update it regularly, and you’ll get a much clearer picture of your real playing level.
