Golf Handicap Index Calculator (WHS Style)

Enter between 3 and 20 recent rounds. For each round, provide your gross score, the course rating, and slope rating. This tool estimates your Handicap Index using World Handicap System-style rules.

Differential formula used: (Score − Course Rating) × 113 ÷ Slope Rating

What is a golfer handicap?

A golf handicap is a number that represents your potential playing ability. Instead of looking only at raw scores, a handicap adjusts for course difficulty so players can compete more fairly across different courses and tees.

The most common standard today is the World Handicap System (WHS). Under WHS, your Handicap Index is based on score differentials from recent rounds, not just average score.

How this handicap calculator works

1) Convert each round into a score differential

For each round, the calculator computes:

  • Score Differential = (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating) × 113 ÷ Slope Rating
  • Lower differentials indicate stronger play relative to course difficulty.

2) Select the best differentials

WHS does not use every round equally. It uses your better differentials from your most recent scores. For a full 20-score record, the lowest 8 differentials are averaged.

3) Apply adjustment rules for fewer than 20 rounds

If you have fewer than 20 rounds posted, WHS uses a smaller number of lowest differentials and may apply an adjustment. This calculator includes that style of reduced-round logic to estimate your Handicap Index.

How many differentials are used?

  • 3 rounds: lowest 1 differential (with -2.0 adjustment)
  • 4 rounds: lowest 1 differential (with -1.0 adjustment)
  • 5 rounds: lowest 1 differential
  • 6 rounds: lowest 2 differentials (with -1.0 adjustment)
  • 7-8 rounds: lowest 2 differentials
  • 9-11 rounds: lowest 3 differentials
  • 12-14 rounds: lowest 4 differentials
  • 15-16 rounds: lowest 5 differentials
  • 17-18 rounds: lowest 6 differentials
  • 19 rounds: lowest 7 differentials
  • 20 rounds: lowest 8 differentials

Quick example

Suppose you enter 8 rounds and your two lowest differentials are 10.4 and 11.2. Your estimated index would be the average of those two: 10.8. If a reduced-round adjustment applies, it is added after averaging selected differentials.

Tips to improve your handicap index

  • Track every score carefully: consistent data gives a more accurate index.
  • Focus on penalty strokes: eliminating one or two penalties per round can move your index quickly.
  • Practice approach shots: proximity to the hole drives scoring improvements.
  • Improve short game: chips and putts often matter more than full swings.
  • Play regularly: more rounds means a more stable and representative handicap.

FAQ

Is this an official handicap service?

No. This is an educational and planning calculator. Official handicaps should be maintained through an authorized golf association or club system.

Can my handicap index be negative?

Yes. Highly skilled players can have a “plus” handicap, represented as a negative index number in calculations.

Why is my handicap different from my average score?

Your index reflects your demonstrated scoring potential on rated courses, not just a simple arithmetic mean of all scores.
