What is GST in Canada?
GST stands for Goods and Services Tax. It is a federal value-added tax charged on most goods and services in Canada. The federal GST rate is currently 5%.
How GST differs from HST, PST, and QST
- HST: Harmonized Sales Tax. In some provinces, GST and provincial tax are combined into one rate (for example, Ontario 13%).
- PST (or RST): Provincial Sales Tax (or Retail Sales Tax). Separate from GST in provinces like BC, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
- QST: Quebec Sales Tax, applied in Quebec alongside GST.
For most everyday calculations, you can use the combined rate shown for your province.

How the calculator works
1) Add tax to a pre-tax amount
If you have a price before tax, the calculator uses:
Tax = Amount × Rate
Total = Amount + Tax
2) Extract tax from a tax-inclusive amount
If your amount already includes tax, the calculator reverses the math:
Subtotal = Total ÷ (1 + Rate)
Tax = Total − Subtotal
Quick examples
- Ontario (13% HST): $100.00 before tax becomes $113.00 total.
- Alberta (5% GST): $100.00 before tax becomes $105.00 total.
- Quebec (14.975% combined): $100.00 before tax becomes $114.98 total (rounded).
