Gypsum Board Calculator
Estimate how many drywall sheets you need for walls and ceiling, plus screws and optional costs.
Tip: add 10% to 15% waste if your room has many corners, bulkheads, or cutouts.
Why use a gypsum board calculator?
A gypsum board calculator helps you estimate materials before you buy. Instead of guessing how many sheets are needed, you can plan based on room dimensions, ceiling coverage, openings, and a realistic waste allowance. This gives you a tighter budget, fewer emergency trips to the supplier, and less leftover board.
Whether you are planning a bedroom renovation, a basement finishing project, or a commercial partition wall, accurate drywall quantity estimation is one of the easiest ways to control cost and scheduling.
What this calculator includes
- Total wall area from room length, width, and wall height
- Optional ceiling area
- Subtraction of window and door openings
- Waste allowance percentage for cuts and breakage
- Estimated number of gypsum boards (rounded up)
- Estimated screws and screw pack count
- Optional material cost estimate for sheets and screws
How the math works
1) Wall area
The calculator uses: Wall Area = 2 × (Length + Width) × Height. This gives the total area for four walls in a rectangular room.
2) Ceiling area
If selected, ceiling area is: Length × Width.
3) Net board area to cover
Openings (doors/windows) are subtracted from wall area. Then wall and ceiling areas are combined. Finally, waste is added as a percentage.
4) Board count
Board area is Board Length × Board Width. Required sheets = Net Coverage Area ÷ Board Area, then rounded up to the next whole board.
Practical planning tips
- Use standard board sizes whenever possible to reduce offcuts.
- Increase waste allowance for angled ceilings, niches, or complicated framing.
- Check framing spacing and board orientation before ordering.
- If installing moisture-resistant board in wet zones, calculate those areas separately.
- Order a small buffer for future repairs in high-traffic spaces.
Common mistakes to avoid
Ignoring openings and bulkheads
Many users either subtract nothing or subtract too much. Measure door and window openings accurately and treat unusual soffits or boxed beams as separate areas.
Using zero waste allowance
Real projects always involve cuts and occasional damage. A waste factor of 10% is a practical baseline; use 12% to 15% for complex layouts.
Forgetting fasteners and finishing materials
Boards are only one part of the purchase. Plan for screws, joint tape, compound, corner beads, and primer. This calculator estimates screws so your ordering is more complete.
Example scenario
Suppose your room is 5m × 4m with 2.8m walls, 4m² of openings, and ceiling included. Using 2.4m × 1.2m boards, the calculator returns the board quantity after waste adjustment. You also get estimated screw demand and optional cost if you enter unit prices.
This fast estimate is ideal for first-pass budgeting. For final ordering, verify local board sizes, installation method, and site-specific details with your contractor or supplier.
Final note
A good gypsum board estimate is the foundation of a smooth installation. Use this calculator early in planning, then refine numbers once framing, electrical cutouts, and room details are finalized.
