Optional: Estimate Course Handicap
What is a golf handicap?
A golf handicap is a number that represents your playing ability, allowing golfers of different skill levels to compete more fairly. A lower handicap means stronger scoring potential. The modern World Handicap System (WHS) standardizes this process globally by using score differentials, course rating, and slope rating.
How this handicap calculator works
This calculator estimates your Handicap Index from the rounds you enter. For each round, it calculates a score differential, ranks your best differentials, and applies the WHS-style rule based on how many scores you have posted.
Score Differential Formula
The calculation used is:
(Adjusted Gross Score - Course Rating - PCC) ร 113 รท Slope Rating
- Adjusted Gross Score: your adjusted score for handicap purposes.
- Course Rating: expected score for a scratch golfer on that course.
- Slope Rating: relative difficulty for a bogey golfer (usually 55 to 155).
- PCC: Playing Conditions Calculation adjustment (optional, usually -1 to +3).
How many differentials are used?
The number of differentials included depends on how many rounds you have:
- 3 scores: lowest 1, adjustment -2.0
- 4 scores: lowest 1, adjustment -1.0
- 5 scores: lowest 1
- 6 scores: lowest 2, adjustment -1.0
- 7-8 scores: lowest 2
- 9-11 scores: lowest 3
- 12-14 scores: lowest 4
- 15-16 scores: lowest 5
- 17-18 scores: lowest 6
- 19 scores: lowest 7
- 20 scores: lowest 8
How to enter your rounds correctly
1) Use adjusted scores
If your league or handicap app applies hole-by-hole adjustments, use the adjusted total, not simply your raw scorecard total.
2) Include accurate course data
Course Rating and Slope Rating must match the exact tees played. Incorrect tee data can materially change your index.
3) PCC is optional
If you do not have a PCC value for a round, leave it off. This calculator defaults PCC to zero.
Understanding your output
After calculation, you will see:
- Your estimated Handicap Index (to one decimal, truncated).
- How many rounds were valid and which differentials were selected.
- Any parsing or validation warnings for lines with bad data.
- Optional Course Handicap estimate if target course fields are provided.
Course Handicap estimate
If you add a target slope (and optionally target rating + par), this page also estimates Course Handicap:
- Basic: Handicap Index ร (Slope / 113)
- With rating/par adjustment: Handicap Index ร (Slope / 113) + (Course Rating - Par)
Results are rounded to the nearest whole number for practical play.
