Golf Handicap (HCP) Calculator

Enter at least 3 rounds (up to 20). Use Adjusted Gross Score, Course Rating, and Slope Rating. PCC is optional and defaults to 0.

Course Handicap Converter

After you calculate your Handicap Index, convert it for a specific course.

How this HCP golf calculator works

This tool follows the World Handicap System (WHS) concept for estimating a Handicap Index from your recent rounds. Each round is converted into a score differential, then the calculator averages the required number of lowest differentials based on how many rounds you have entered.

Score differential formula

For each round:
Differential = ((Adjusted Gross Score - Course Rating - PCC) × 113) / Slope Rating

  • Adjusted Gross Score (AGS): Your score after any hole-by-hole max adjustments.
  • Course Rating: Difficulty rating for a scratch golfer.
  • Slope Rating: Relative difficulty for a bogey golfer (55 to 155).
  • PCC: Playing Conditions Calculation adjustment (often 0).

How many scores are used?

WHS does not always use 8 scores. The number depends on how many rounds are in your record. This calculator applies the common WHS table:

  • 3 scores: lowest 1, minus 2.0 adjustment
  • 4 scores: lowest 1, minus 1.0 adjustment
  • 5 scores: lowest 1
  • 6 scores: lowest 2, minus 1.0 adjustment
  • 7-8 scores: lowest 2
  • 9-11 scores: lowest 3
  • 12-14 scores: lowest 4
  • 15-16 scores: lowest 5
  • 17-18 scores: lowest 6
  • 19 scores: lowest 7
  • 20 scores: lowest 8

Step-by-step usage

  1. Enter at least 3 rounds (up to 20).
  2. Click Calculate Handicap Index.
  3. Review your calculated index and the selected lowest differentials.
  4. If needed, enter target course details to convert to Course Handicap.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Entering total score instead of adjusted score.
  • Using the wrong tee's Course Rating and Slope Rating.
  • Mixing up Course Handicap and Handicap Index.
  • Forgetting to include PCC when one was posted for the day.

Handicap Index vs Course Handicap

Your Handicap Index is portable and represents your demonstrated ability. Your Course Handicap converts that index for a specific course and set of tees, accounting for slope (and optionally rating minus par). This is why your shots received can change from one course to another.

Final note

This calculator is designed for fast estimates and personal tracking. Official handicaps are maintained through authorized golf associations and systems. Still, if you want a practical way to understand your numbers, this HCP golf calculator gives you a clear and accurate working view.
