How to use this hit point calculator 5e

This calculator is designed for single-class characters in Dungeons & Dragons 5e. Pick your class (or manually set the hit die), enter your level and Constitution score, then choose how you gain HP after level 1. You can use fixed values from the Player’s Handbook or enter your actual rolled values from each level-up.

It also supports two common HP bonuses: the Tough feat and the Hill Dwarf Dwarven Toughness trait. If your table uses additional per-level bonuses from house rules, magic, or campaign features, you can enter those too.

Quick 5e hit point rules refresher

Level 1 HP

At first level, your max HP starts as the maximum value of your class hit die + Constitution modifier. Example: a level 1 fighter has 10 + Con modifier.

Leveling up (levels 2+)

On each new level, you gain HP by either:

  • Taking the fixed value listed for your class (for example, fighter gets +6 before Con), or
  • Rolling your class hit die and adding your Con modifier.

Importantly, each level-up HP gain has a minimum of 1 before other bonuses.

What fixed values mean in 5e

The fixed value is essentially the die average rounded up:

  • d6 class: +4 per level
  • d8 class: +5 per level
  • d10 class: +6 per level
  • d12 class: +7 per level

If you’re unsure which method to choose, fixed HP is the most predictable and avoids low-roll streaks. Many players prefer it for campaign consistency.

Common modifiers that change max HP

Tough feat

Tough adds +2 max HP per level. This applies immediately and scales with every level you have.

Hill Dwarf

Dwarven Toughness gives +1 max HP per level. Like Tough, it scales with character level.

Constitution changes over time

If your Constitution modifier increases (for example, from an Ability Score Improvement), your max HP changes by +1 per level for each point of modifier gained. This calculator assumes a single Constitution score for all levels, which is great for quick planning. For strict historical leveling accuracy, you can recalculate in segments.

Example: level 8 paladin

Let’s say you are a level 8 paladin (d10) with Constitution 16 (+3), using fixed HP gains and no feats:

  • Level 1: 10 + 3 = 13
  • Levels 2-8: (6 + 3) × 7 = 63
  • Total: 76 HP

Add Tough and that becomes +16 more (2 × 8), for a total of 92 HP.

Tips for balancing survivability in 5e

  • Frontliners: prioritize Constitution early.
  • Casters: even a +2 Con can dramatically improve concentration reliability.
  • Feat choices: Tough is simple, effective, and scales all campaign long.
  • Party play: HP is only one defense layer—AC, positioning, and control matter too.

FAQ

Does this calculator include temporary HP?

No. Temporary HP is tracked separately and does not increase your max HP.

Can I use this for multiclass characters?

This version is optimized for one class. For multiclass builds, calculate each class segment separately and add them.

Why does rolled mode need one value per level?

That allows the calculator to apply the “minimum 1 HP per level” rule correctly and produce an accurate breakdown.
