Estimate Your Hong Kong Salaries Tax
Enter your annual income details below. This calculator compares progressive rates with the standard rate (15%) and uses the lower result.
How Hong Kong Salaries Tax Is Calculated
Hong Kong salaries tax is generally simple compared with many other tax systems. The Inland Revenue Department calculates tax under two methods and you pay whichever is lower:
- Progressive rates on your net chargeable income
- Standard rate (15%) on your net income
Your net chargeable income is your assessable income after deductions and personal allowances. This structure means many taxpayers benefit from allowances and pay less than the standard rate calculation.
Rates Used in This Calculator
This hong kong salary tax calculator uses a common salaries tax progressive structure:
- First HK$50,000 at 2%
- Next HK$50,000 at 6%
- Next HK$50,000 at 10%
- Next HK$50,000 at 14%
- Remainder at 17%
It also compares your progressive tax result against a 15% standard rate and selects the lower amount as estimated tax payable.
Allowances and Deductions Included
1) Personal allowance
You can choose between basic allowance (single) or married person’s allowance. This directly reduces net chargeable income for the progressive method.
2) Child allowance
The calculator applies a per-child allowance amount for each eligible child entered.
3) MPF and other deductions
Mandatory MPF contributions can reduce taxable income (subject to cap). If auto mode is enabled, the calculator computes 5% of employment income capped at HK$18,000. You can also include other deductions manually.
