What this Hong Kong taxi price calculator does
This calculator gives you a fast estimate of taxi costs in Hong Kong based on distance, waiting time, and common extras. It is useful for trip budgeting, comparing routes, or deciding between taxi, MTR, and ride-hailing options.
Because meter policies can be revised, this page should be used as a planning guide. Always check the latest official fare notice if you need exact figures.

How the calculation works
1) Distance charge
The first 2 km are covered by a starting fare. After that, the meter increases in 200-meter steps. A higher step rate applies until 9 km, then a lower step rate applies for the rest of the trip.
2) Waiting time charge
If your trip includes traffic delays, pickup waiting, or long stops at lights, the meter also adds time-based charges. This calculator applies the per-minute waiting rate shown in the selected taxi type.
3) Extras and surcharges
- Luggage or pets: Some items may have fixed charges (often HK$6 per item).
- Tunnel/bridge tolls: Usually paid by the passenger and can significantly affect total fare.
- Booking fees: If your trip includes dispatch or call-out charges, add them here.
Example use cases
- Airport run planning: Add estimated tunnel costs to avoid surprise totals.
- Peak-hour comparison: Increase waiting minutes to model traffic-heavy conditions.
- Group travel: Add luggage items and compare cost per person versus train options.
What can make real fares different?
Even with a good estimator, your final meter reading may vary due to:
- Driver route choice or real-time diversions
- Unexpected congestion, roadworks, or queueing at pickup areas
- Different interpretations of chargeable baggage items
- Policy or fare updates not yet reflected on this page
Practical tips to reduce taxi costs in Hong Kong
- Travel slightly before or after peak traffic windows where possible.
- Use major pickup points with smoother exits to reduce idle time.
- Keep luggage organized to avoid extra loading delays.
- Check tunnel alternatives if time allows and toll savings are meaningful.
