Wet Food Calculator
Use this tool to estimate your cat’s daily wet food amount in calories, cans, grams, and per-meal portions.
Why a wet food calculator helps
Feeding the right amount of wet food is one of the biggest factors in your cat’s long-term health. Too little food can lead to weight loss, low energy, and nutrient gaps. Too much food can cause weight gain, which raises the risk of diabetes, arthritis, and other chronic issues.
This calculator gives you a practical starting point based on your cat’s body weight, life stage, and goals. It converts daily calorie needs into real-world can amounts, so feeding decisions become easier.
How this calculator works
Step 1: Estimate daily calorie needs
We estimate Resting Energy Requirement (RER) and then apply a life-stage multiplier to get a Daily Energy Requirement (DER):
- RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)0.75
- Multiplier adjusts for adult/senior/kitten and feeding goal
- Activity level slightly raises or lowers the estimate for adult/senior cats
Step 2: Convert calories to cans and grams
Once calories are estimated, the tool calculates:
- Total cans (or pouches) per day
- Total grams per day
- Per-meal portions based on how many meals you feed
Typical wet food calorie density
| Package Size | Typical Calories | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| 2.8-3 oz can (80-85 g) | 70-110 kcal | Enter exact label calories for best accuracy |
| 5.5 oz can (156 g) | 140-220 kcal | Use your brand’s listed metabolizable energy |
| Pouch formats | 55-100 kcal | Calories vary a lot by recipe; always check label |
Feeding tips for better results
1) Weigh your cat regularly
A weekly or biweekly weigh-in helps you adjust faster. Small changes in weight can matter over time.
2) Recalculate when diet changes
If you switch brands, flavors, or can sizes, your daily can count may change significantly due to different calorie densities.
3) If you mix wet and dry food
Subtract dry food calories first:
- Wet calories needed = total daily calories - dry food calories
- Then divide wet calories by calories per can/pouch
4) Transition gradually
When changing foods, move over 5-7 days to reduce digestive upset.
FAQ
How many times a day should I feed wet food?
Most adult cats do well with 2-4 meals daily. Smaller, frequent meals can help some cats with hunger and digestion.
What if my cat is always hungry?
First confirm calories are appropriate and check for low-fiber/high-palate foods that may not satisfy. If hunger persists despite proper feeding, talk to your vet to rule out medical causes.
Can kittens use this calculator?
Yes, there are kitten options built in. Kittens usually need more calories per pound than adults because they are growing quickly.
When should I contact my veterinarian?
Contact your vet if your cat has rapid weight changes, vomiting, diarrhea, poor coat quality, low appetite, or a major increase in hunger or thirst.
Bottom line: Use the calculator as your baseline, then adjust based on your cat’s body condition score and your veterinarian’s recommendations.
