If you have ever wondered how golfers of different skill levels can compete fairly, the answer is the handicap system. This calculator helps you estimate your Handicap Index using the World Handicap System (WHS) approach based on your score differentials.
Golf Handicap Calculator (WHS Style)
Add each round below. The calculator computes score differentials, selects the correct number of lowest differentials, then returns your estimated Handicap Index.
Formula used: Score Differential = ((Adjusted Gross Score - Course Rating - PCC) × 113) ÷ Slope Rating
| # | Score | Rating | Slope | PCC | Differential | Action |

What is a golf handicap?
A golf handicap is a number that represents your potential playing ability. Lower numbers indicate stronger players. The purpose is fairness: a 4-handicap and a 20-handicap can still compete by applying handicap strokes.
What numbers do you need?
- Adjusted Gross Score (AGS): your score after applying maximum hole score adjustments.
- Course Rating: expected score for a scratch golfer on that course/tee.
- Slope Rating: how difficult the course plays for a bogey golfer relative to a scratch golfer.
- PCC (Playing Conditions Calculation): daily adjustment, usually 0, sometimes -1 to +3.
How to calculate a score differential
For each round, convert your score into a differential:
Score Differential = ((AGS - Course Rating - PCC) × 113) ÷ Slope Rating
Example: AGS 92, Rating 71.4, Slope 128, PCC 0
Differential = ((92 - 71.4 - 0) × 113) ÷ 128 = 18.2
How Handicap Index is selected from your rounds
The WHS uses your most recent rounds and takes low differentials. For a full 20-score record, the lowest 8 differentials are averaged.
Rounds required and count used
- 3 rounds: lowest 1 differential, minus 2.0 adjustment
- 4 rounds: lowest 1 differential, minus 1.0 adjustment
- 5 rounds: lowest 1 differential
- 6 rounds: lowest 2 differentials, minus 1.0 adjustment
- 7–8 rounds: lowest 2 differentials
- 9–11 rounds: lowest 3 differentials
- 12–14 rounds: lowest 4 differentials
- 15–16 rounds: lowest 5 differentials
- 17–18 rounds: lowest 6 differentials
- 19 rounds: lowest 7 differentials
- 20 rounds: lowest 8 differentials
Step-by-step: using this calculator
- Enter AGS, Course Rating, Slope Rating, and optional PCC.
- Click Add Round for each posted score.
- Repeat until you have at least 3 rounds (20 preferred).
- Click Calculate Handicap Index.
- Review the selected low differentials and your estimated index.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using raw score instead of adjusted gross score.
- Entering the wrong tee’s Course Rating/Slope.
- Mixing old formulas with current WHS rules.
- Forgetting that an official club/service may apply additional safeguards and updates.
