IAAF Combined Events Scoring Calculator

Calculate points for the men's decathlon or women's heptathlon using official IAAF/World Athletics formulas.

Tip: For 800m and 1500m, you can enter times as seconds (e.g., 132.55) or mm:ss.xx (e.g., 2:12.55).

What is IAAF scoring?

IAAF scoring (now maintained by World Athletics) is a mathematical method for turning raw performances into points in combined events. Instead of ranking athletes by placing in each event, decathlon and heptathlon use points from all events and then sum them into one total score.

This lets very different performances—like a sprint time and a throwing distance—be compared fairly inside a single competition.

How the formula works

Track events

For running events, lower times are better, so points use:

Points = A × (B − T)C

Where T is time in seconds.

Field events

For jumps and throws, higher distances/heights are better, so points use:

Points = A × (M − B)C

Where M is the measured mark (meters for throws, centimeters for long jump/high jump/pole vault in the official equations).

How to use this calculator

  • Select Men's Decathlon or Women's Heptathlon.
  • Enter each performance in the order shown.
  • Click Calculate Score to see points per event and your total.
  • If you leave events blank, the total will reflect only the entered events.

Input guide and common mistakes

Running events

  • Use seconds (e.g., 10.84) or minute format (e.g., 4:35.22 for 1500m).
  • Use decimals with a period. Commas are also accepted and converted automatically.

Jumps in centimeters vs meters

  • Long jump, high jump, and pole vault can be entered as meters (e.g., 2.05) or centimeters (e.g., 205).
  • This tool automatically converts small values to centimeters when needed.

Throws

Shot put, discus, and javelin should be entered in meters (e.g., 15.34).

Why these points matter

Combined-event scoring rewards balanced athleticism. You can have one weak event and still be competitive if your overall profile is strong. Coaches often use calculators like this for:

  • season planning and target-setting,
  • day-by-day meet strategy,
  • estimating qualification potential.

Quick FAQ

Is this the same as road race age grading?

No. This is specifically for combined events (decathlon/heptathlon) points tables.

Can this replace official meet scoring?

It is highly accurate for planning and analysis, but official meet software and judges’ marks are always final.

Why is my score zero in an event?

If a performance is outside formula bounds (for example, too slow in a sprint or below minimum baseline in a field event), the equation yields zero points.

Final thought

If you train multis, this calculator is one of the easiest ways to turn workouts and test results into meaningful progress data. Save your totals over time and watch how improvements in one or two events can shift your overall championship potential.
