iban to bic calculator

IBAN to BIC / SWIFT Code Finder

Enter an IBAN to validate it and try to find the matching BIC (Bank Identifier Code / SWIFT code) using a built-in bank directory.

Note: BIC lookup is based on a local directory of common institutions. For official payment instructions, always confirm with your bank or payee.

What this IBAN to BIC calculator does

This tool helps you do two things quickly: verify whether an IBAN is structurally valid, and identify a likely BIC/SWIFT code for that IBAN’s bank. It’s useful when you’re setting up an international transfer, checking payment details, or just trying to understand banking identifiers better.

In many payment systems, IBAN and BIC are used together. The IBAN identifies a specific account in a standardized format, while the BIC identifies the financial institution that handles the transfer.

How the calculation works

1) Normalize and validate the IBAN

The calculator removes spaces, converts letters to uppercase, checks country length rules, and runs the official IBAN checksum test (mod-97). If the checksum fails, the IBAN is invalid.

2) Extract bank identifier data

For supported countries, the script reads the bank code segment embedded in the IBAN. This segment differs by country (for example, BLZ in Germany or 4-letter bank code in the Netherlands and the UK).

3) Match against BIC directory

The extracted bank code is matched to a local mapping table. If a match exists, you get the likely BIC and bank name. If not, the tool still confirms whether the IBAN itself is valid.

Why IBAN-to-BIC is not always one-to-one

Not every IBAN can be converted to one unique BIC in all situations. Some banks use multiple BICs by branch, region, or service type. Also, some payment zones no longer require BIC for standard domestic or SEPA transfers.

  • One bank code may map to multiple BICs.
  • Institutions merge or rebrand, changing active BICs.
  • Legacy BICs can still appear in older records.

Supported lookup coverage in this page

This calculator includes common mappings for selected banks in countries such as Germany, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, France, and Italy. It is designed for practical lookups and education—not as a complete SWIFT directory.

Tips for safe use

  • Always compare the returned BIC with official beneficiary instructions.
  • If a transfer is high value, verify directly with the receiving bank.
  • Watch for copy/paste mistakes in IBAN digits.
  • Do not share full account data publicly.

FAQ

Is this an official BIC checker?

No. It is a fast client-side calculator with a curated directory for common banks.

Can a valid IBAN return “BIC not found”?

Yes. That means the IBAN format/checksum is valid, but this page doesn’t have a matching bank code entry.

What is another name for BIC?

BIC is often called a SWIFT code. They are commonly used interchangeably in payment instructions.
