ielts banding calculator

If you are preparing for IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training, this calculator helps you estimate your overall IELTS band score from the four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

IELTS Overall Band Calculator

Enter your four section scores (from 0 to 9). Decimal values are allowed.

How IELTS banding works

Your IELTS result is based on four skill scores:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking

Each skill is scored on a 0 to 9 band scale. Your overall band score is the average of these four scores, then rounded according to IELTS rounding rules.

Official-style rounding method

After averaging the four section scores:

  • If the decimal part is below 0.25, round down to the nearest whole band.
  • If the decimal part is from 0.25 up to 0.74, round to the nearest half band.
  • If the decimal part is 0.75 or above, round up to the next whole band.
Average Score Rounded Overall Band
6.12 6.0
6.25 6.5
6.75 7.0

Example IELTS calculations

Example 1

Listening 7.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.0, Speaking 7.0

Average = (7.5 + 6.5 + 6.0 + 7.0) / 4 = 6.75 → Overall Band = 7.0

Example 2

Listening 6.0, Reading 6.0, Writing 6.5, Speaking 6.5

Average = 6.25 → Overall Band = 6.5

Example 3

Listening 8.0, Reading 7.5, Writing 7.0, Speaking 7.5

Average = 7.50 → Overall Band = 7.5

Tip: Many universities and immigration programs require both an overall score and minimum scores in each section. Always check section-by-section requirements, not only the final overall band.
