IELTS Band Score Calculator
Enter your section scores below. This tool converts Listening/Reading raw scores (out of 40) into band scores, then calculates your overall IELTS band.
Note: Conversion tables are based on commonly used IELTS band mappings. Official scoring can vary slightly by test version.
How the IELTS grades calculator works
The IELTS exam gives you four individual section scores: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Each section is graded on a band scale from 0 to 9. Your overall IELTS band is the average of these four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band (0.5) or whole band.
This calculator does the math for you in two steps:
- It converts your Listening and Reading raw scores (correct answers out of 40) into band scores.
- It averages all four section bands and rounds using IELTS rules to get your final overall band.
IELTS overall band rounding rule
After calculating the average of your four section bands, IELTS applies a specific rounding method:
- If the average ends in .25, it rounds up to .5.
- If the average ends in .75, it rounds up to the next whole band.
- Other values round to the nearest half-band.
Example: (Listening 7.5 + Reading 6.5 + Writing 6.0 + Speaking 7.0) รท 4 = 6.75, so overall band = 7.0.
Listening and Reading conversion basics
Listening (common conversion)
Listening conversion is usually the same for Academic and General Training test takers.
| Raw Score | Band |
|---|---|
| 39-40 | 9.0 |
| 37-38 | 8.5 |
| 35-36 | 8.0 |
| 32-34 | 7.5 |
| 30-31 | 7.0 |
| 26-29 | 6.5 |
| 23-25 | 6.0 |
Reading: Academic vs General Training
Reading conversion differs between modules. Academic Reading usually requires more correct answers for the same band compared with General Training Reading. That is why this calculator includes a test type selector before calculating your reading band.
What IELTS band scores mean in practice
Most universities and immigration pathways set minimum section bands and an overall target. For example, one program might ask for an overall 6.5 with no section below 6.0, while another might require 7.0 overall with 6.5 in Writing.
Because of this, your preparation strategy should focus on both:
- Overall improvement (raising average performance), and
- Section-specific minimums (especially Writing, which is often the hardest to increase quickly).
How to improve your IELTS band efficiently
1) Improve accuracy before speed
In Listening and Reading, small gains in correct answers can move your band by 0.5. Build habits around error tracking, not just total practice tests.
2) Use band descriptors for Writing and Speaking
For productive skills, scoring depends on criteria such as coherence, lexical resource, grammar, and task response. Study official descriptors and practice with targeted feedback.
3) Train in exam conditions
Timed mock tests reveal pacing problems early. Simulate real test constraints weekly to reduce surprises on exam day.
4) Track progress numerically
Use this calculator after each mock test cycle. Seeing your estimated overall band helps you decide whether to prioritize one weak section or continue balanced practice.
Frequently asked questions
Is this calculator official?
No. It is an educational estimation tool based on common conversion tables and standard IELTS rounding rules.
Can raw score conversion vary?
Yes, slightly. Different test versions may have minor differences in conversion thresholds, so always check official guidance when available.
What if I already know my Listening/Reading band scores?
You can enter equivalent raw scores or adapt the values manually. The key part is that the final overall score is the average of four section bands, rounded correctly.
