IELTS Band Score Calculator

Enter your Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking band scores to calculate your IELTS overall band score using official rounding rules.

Valid range: 0.0 to 9.0 (typically in 0.5-band increments).

How the IELTS overall score is calculated

The IELTS overall score is based on the average of your four section scores: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Each section is graded from 0 to 9. To calculate your overall band, add the four section bands and divide by 4.

After finding the average, IELTS applies official rounding to the nearest whole or half band:

  • If the decimal is below .25, round down to the nearest whole band.
  • If the decimal is between .25 and .74, round to the nearest .5 band.
  • If the decimal is .75 or higher, round up to the next whole band.

Formula

Overall Band = (Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking) / 4, then rounded using IELTS rules.

Academic vs General Training: does the overall formula change?

No. The overall band calculation method is the same for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. The difference is mainly in how Reading and Writing sections are designed and scored internally. But once section bands are reported, the same averaging and rounding process is used.

Tips to improve your IELTS overall band

1) Target your weakest module first

If one skill is much lower than the others, raising that section often gives the fastest overall score improvement. For example, moving Writing from 5.5 to 6.5 can significantly lift your final average.

2) Practice with strict timing

Many candidates know the material but lose points due to timing mistakes. Build exam-day rhythm by using full, timed practice tests.

3) Build a section-specific strategy

  • Listening: Predict answers and track signpost words.
  • Reading: Improve skimming and scanning techniques.
  • Writing: Focus on structure, coherence, and clear task response.
  • Speaking: Develop fluency with extended answers, not one-line replies.

4) Review error patterns

Don’t just count right/wrong answers. Categorize mistakes: vocabulary gaps, grammar errors, misreading instructions, and time pressure. Fixing repeated error types can quickly push your band higher.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an overall 6.5 if two modules are 6.0?

Yes, depending on the other two scores. The overall result depends on the average of all four modules and official rounding rules.

Are section scores always in 0.5 increments?

Reported module band scores are typically shown in whole or half bands. This calculator supports that standard format.

Does this calculator replace official IELTS results?

No. This is an estimate tool for planning and practice. Your official score is determined and issued by the test organization.

Note: Universities, immigration bodies, and employers may require both a minimum overall band and minimum section bands. Always check the exact score policy for your target institution or visa route.
