IELTS Overall Band Calculator

Enter your four module band scores (0 to 9, in 0.5 steps), then click calculate.

Note: This tool estimates your official overall IELTS band by applying standard rounding to the nearest half band.

How this IELTS score calculator works

Your IELTS result contains four module scores: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The overall band is calculated by taking the average of these four numbers and then rounding to the nearest half band (0.5) or whole band. This calculator automates that process so you can quickly estimate your final result.

Whether you are preparing for study abroad, work migration, or professional registration, understanding your overall score target can help you create a better study plan and track progress over time.

IELTS band score basics

Module scores

  • Listening: Measures your ability to understand spoken English in different accents and situations.
  • Reading: Tests comprehension of academic or general English texts, depending on your test type.
  • Writing: Evaluates organization, grammar, vocabulary, and task achievement.
  • Speaking: Assesses fluency, pronunciation, lexical resource, and grammatical range/accuracy.

Overall score formula

The overall band is based on this formula:

(Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking) ÷ 4 = Average Band

The average band is then rounded using IELTS rounding rules.

IELTS rounding rules explained simply

  • If the average ends in .25, it rounds up to .5.
  • If the average ends in .75, it rounds up to the next whole band.
  • Otherwise, the score is rounded to the nearest half band.

Example: If your average is 6.25, your overall score is 6.5. If your average is 6.75, your overall score is 7.0.

Sample calculations

Example 1

Listening 7.5, Reading 7.0, Writing 6.5, Speaking 7.0
Average = (7.5 + 7.0 + 6.5 + 7.0) ÷ 4 = 7.0
Overall Band = 7.0

Example 2

Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 6.0, Speaking 6.0
Average = (8.0 + 7.0 + 6.0 + 6.0) ÷ 4 = 6.75
Overall Band = 7.0

Example 3

Listening 6.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.0, Speaking 6.0
Average = (6.5 + 6.5 + 6.0 + 6.0) ÷ 4 = 6.25
Overall Band = 6.5

What band score do you need?

Required IELTS scores vary by country, university, visa stream, and profession. Many undergraduate programs ask for around 6.0 to 6.5, while competitive postgraduate courses may require 7.0 or higher. Some registration bodies require specific minimum scores in each module, not just the overall band.

  • Check both overall band and minimum module bands.
  • Always verify the latest requirement on the official institution website.
  • Plan your preparation around your weakest module first.

Practical tips to improve your IELTS score

1) Raise your weakest module

Improving one weak module can significantly increase your final average. For example, moving Writing from 5.5 to 6.5 can change your total outcome more than small gains in already-strong modules.

2) Practice timed tasks

Time pressure affects performance in Reading and Writing. Train with full-length mock tests to build speed and accuracy.

3) Use feedback loops

For Speaking and Writing, feedback is essential. Work with a qualified tutor or use detailed band descriptors to identify exactly what needs improvement.

4) Track mock scores weekly

Enter your latest mock band scores into this calculator each week. Progress tracking helps you predict exam readiness and set realistic test dates.
