IELTS Band Score Calculator
Enter your section scores below to estimate your overall IELTS band. Listening and Reading are entered as raw scores out of 40.
How this IELTS test band calculator works
This IELTS test band calculator helps you estimate your overall score from your four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The calculator first converts Listening and Reading raw scores (out of 40) into band scores. Then it averages all four skills and applies IELTS rounding rules to produce an estimated overall band.
It is designed for quick planning, progress tracking, and target-setting. If you are preparing for university admission, immigration, or professional registration, this tool gives you a clear snapshot of where you stand today.
IELTS scoring basics
1) Section bands
Each module is reported on a 0 to 9 scale:
- Listening: Raw score out of 40 converted to a band.
- Reading: Raw score out of 40 converted to a band (Academic and General Training use different conversion tables).
- Writing: Examiner band score (0-9).
- Speaking: Examiner band score (0-9).
2) Overall band
IELTS calculates the average of the four module bands, then rounds according to official rules:
- Fraction under .25 rounds down to the nearest whole band.
- Fraction from .25 to .74 rounds to .5.
- Fraction .75 or higher rounds up to the next whole band.
Example: If your average is 6.625, it rounds to 6.5. If your average is 6.75, it rounds to 7.0.

Practical score planning tips
Raise your overall band faster
Many candidates can improve Listening and Reading more quickly because these sections are objective and highly trainable. If your Writing is your weakest skill, targeted improvement in Listening/Reading can still move your total band upward.
Focus on half-band jumps
Admissions and visa requirements usually ask for exact thresholds like 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. Plan your study around these cutoffs, not just a vague “higher score.”
Track progress weekly
Run this calculator after each full mock test. Keep a simple spreadsheet of all four skills and your estimated overall band. Trends are more useful than single test results.
Important note
This tool provides an estimate. Official IELTS results are determined by authorized scoring processes and examiner judgment, especially in Writing and Speaking. Always use your Test Report Form as the final authority.
