What is IVA in Spain?

IVA stands for Impuesto sobre el Valor Añadido, which is Spain’s value-added tax (VAT). It is applied to most goods and services sold in Spain. If you are a freelancer, a business owner, an online seller, or even just a customer reviewing invoices, understanding IVA helps you avoid costly mistakes.

In day-to-day business, IVA normally works as a percentage added to the net price. For example, if a service costs €100 net and the applicable rate is 21%, the invoice total becomes €121 gross. If you already have a gross amount and need the net and tax split, you must reverse the calculation instead of simply subtracting 21%.

Current IVA rates in Spain

21% – General rate

This is the standard rate and applies to most products and services, including many professional services, electronics, and general retail sales.

10% – Reduced rate

The reduced rate commonly applies to specific categories such as certain food products, passenger transport, and hotel/accommodation services.

4% – Super-reduced rate

This rate is used for essentials in selected categories, such as basic foods and certain books or medical items, depending on the legal definition.

0% and exempt operations

Some transactions can be zero-rated or exempt under Spanish and EU VAT rules. These cases are technical and can depend on product type, customer status, and place of supply. Always verify current rules with official guidance or a tax professional.

How to use this IVA Spain calculator

  • Select Add IVA if you have a net amount and need the final gross total.
  • Select Extract IVA if you have a gross amount and want to know the net base and tax included.
  • Choose a predefined Spanish IVA rate (21%, 10%, 4%, 0%) or enter a custom rate.
  • Click Calculate IVA to see a full breakdown.

The calculator outputs three figures: taxable base (net), IVA amount, and total (gross). This mirrors how many invoices display values in Spain.

IVA formulas explained

When adding IVA to a net amount

IVA Amount = Net × (Rate / 100)

Gross Total = Net + IVA Amount

When extracting IVA from a gross amount

Net Amount = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate / 100)

IVA Amount = Gross − Net

This is the correct reverse formula. A common mistake is to subtract the rate directly from the gross amount, which gives the wrong result.

Worked examples

Example 1: Add 21% IVA to €1,000

  • Net: €1,000.00
  • IVA (21%): €210.00
  • Gross total: €1,210.00

Example 2: Extract 21% IVA from €1,210

  • Gross: €1,210.00
  • Net: €1,000.00
  • IVA included: €210.00

Example 3: Reduced 10% rate on €350 net

  • Net: €350.00
  • IVA (10%): €35.00
  • Gross total: €385.00

For freelancers and businesses in Spain

If you are registered as autónomo or run a company, IVA management affects pricing, invoicing, and quarterly tax filings. Many businesses collect IVA from customers and later declare it to the tax authority, offset by deductible input IVA on eligible business expenses.

  • Use the correct rate for each product/service category.
  • Keep invoices organized by period for accurate declarations.
  • Separate net, IVA, and total in your bookkeeping system.
  • Check cross-border EU rules for B2B and digital services.
