How this IVF gestation calculator works
In natural conception, due dates are usually estimated from the last menstrual period (LMP). IVF is different because we know the exact embryo transfer date and embryo age. That precision allows us to estimate gestational age and due date with less uncertainty.
This IVF pregnancy calculator uses your transfer date plus embryo age (for example, day-3 or day-5 transfer) to determine:
- Your estimated due date (EDD)
- Your LMP-equivalent date used in obstetric dating
- Your gestational age in weeks and days
- Key milestone dates across pregnancy
IVF due date formula
Step 1: Estimate LMP-equivalent date
Gestational age starts about 14 days before conception in standard obstetric dating. For IVF, the embryo already has age at transfer, so:
- LMP-equivalent date = Transfer date - (14 + embryo age in days)
Step 2: Estimate due date
A typical pregnancy is dated as 280 days (40 weeks) from LMP:
- Estimated due date = LMP-equivalent date + 280 days
That is mathematically the same as adding 263 days for a day-3 transfer, or 261 days for a day-5 transfer.
Why IVF dating is often more accurate
With spontaneous conception, ovulation may vary from cycle to cycle. With IVF, important timing events are known precisely: egg retrieval, fertilization timeline, and embryo transfer day. This improves accuracy for gestational dating and helps your care team plan ultrasounds, prenatal labs, and expected delivery windows.
How to use this embryo transfer due date calculator
- Enter your embryo transfer date.
- Select embryo age at transfer (day 3, day 5, or day 6).
- Choose the “as of” date (usually today).
- Click Calculate IVF Dates.
The result panel will show your due date estimate, current gestational age, current trimester, and useful milestone dates such as 12 weeks, 20 weeks anatomy scan timing, and full-term windows.
Common IVF pregnancy milestones
Early pregnancy
- 6 weeks: often when heartbeat may be seen on ultrasound.
- 8 weeks: early viability and dating checks are common.
- 10–12 weeks: NIPT and first-trimester testing windows.
Mid to late pregnancy
- 20 weeks: anatomy scan period.
- 24 weeks: viability threshold used in many settings.
- 28 weeks: third trimester begins.
- 37–40 weeks: early term to full term range.
Frequently asked questions
Does frozen embryo transfer (FET) change the due date formula?
No. Fresh and frozen transfers use the same dating approach: transfer date plus embryo age. The embryo’s developmental day at transfer is what matters for gestational calculation.
What if I’m pregnant with twins?
The estimated due date may be calculated the same way, but management and delivery timing can differ for multiple pregnancies. Your specialist may discuss a different expected delivery window.
Is this the same as my clinic’s official due date?
Usually close, often identical. However, your clinic or obstetric provider may adjust dates based on ultrasound findings or specific clinical protocols. Use this as an estimate only.
