When a JR Pass usually makes sense
1) Fast-paced multi-city itineraries
If your schedule includes several long Shinkansen hops in a short period, the pass can still be valuable. Example pattern: Tokyo → Kyoto → Hiroshima → Osaka → Tokyo in a week.
2) Extra long-distance day trips
Adding major day trips can push your total above break-even. For instance, Kansai plus Hiroshima, or Tokyo with northern Tohoku trips, can materially change the math.
3) You value flexibility
Some travelers accept a small extra cost for convenience: fewer ticket purchases, easier spontaneity, and smooth reservation handling at JR counters.
When individual tickets may be better
- You are staying mainly in one region (for example, only Kansai or only Tokyo area).

- You only have one major Shinkansen segment and mostly local transport after that.

- The nationwide pass does not fully cover all fastest Nozomi/Mizuho services without additional fees.
- Subways, many private rail lines, and some special trains are excluded.
