KDP Paperback Cover Calculator

Calculate your full wrap cover size for Amazon KDP paperback books, including spine width and optional bleed.

Tip: This calculator is for paperback wrap covers. Hardcover and spiral products use different templates.

Why use a KDP cover calculator?

If you publish on Amazon KDP, one of the easiest ways to delay your launch is uploading a cover file with the wrong dimensions. KDP needs a full-wrap PDF or image that includes:

  • Back cover width
  • Spine width (based on page count and paper type)
  • Front cover width
  • Optional bleed area

This calculator gives you those exact dimensions quickly, so you can set up your Canva, Photoshop, Affinity, or InDesign file correctly the first time.

KDP paperback cover formula

For paperbacks, the total file size is based on trim size, spine width, and bleed settings.

Spine Width = Page Count × Paper Thickness
Full Cover Width = (2 × Trim Width) + Spine Width + (Bleed ? 0.25 : 0)
Full Cover Height = Trim Height + (Bleed ? 0.25 : 0)

Bleed adds 0.125 inches to each outer edge of the full cover. That means +0.25 inches in width (left + right) and +0.25 inches in height (top + bottom).

Paper thickness values used

  • Black & White on White: 0.002252 inches per page
  • Black & White on Cream: 0.0025 inches per page
  • Color on White: 0.002347 inches per page
  • Premium Color on White: 0.0025 inches per page

These values are commonly used by KDP creators for cover setup calculations. Always verify current specs in your KDP dashboard before final upload.

How to use this calculator

1) Choose your units

Select inches or millimeters. The calculator always returns both, so you can work in whichever unit your design software prefers.

2) Enter trim size

Trim size is your final book size after printing and cutting (for example, 6" × 9").

3) Enter page count

Use your final formatted interior page count. Even a small page change affects spine width.

4) Select interior type and bleed

Paper type affects page thickness, which directly changes the spine. Enable bleed if artwork reaches the edge of the page.

5) Copy dimensions into your design file

Set the full canvas size first, then add guides for back cover, spine, and front cover sections.

Common KDP trim sizes

  • 5" × 8" (common for fiction)
  • 5.5" × 8.5" (general nonfiction)
  • 6" × 9" (most popular nonfiction size)
  • 8" × 10" (workbooks and visual books)
  • 8.5" × 11" (manuals and textbooks)

Bleed vs no bleed

Use bleed if:

  • Your background image or color touches the edge of the page
  • You want full-coverage artwork with no white margins

Use no bleed if:

  • All content stays safely inside margins
  • You intentionally want white borders

Design safety tips before upload

  • Keep text at least 0.25" from trim edges.
  • Keep important text and logos away from the spine fold.
  • Leave room for KDP barcode placement on the back cover (usually lower-right area).
  • Export high-resolution PDF (print quality) with embedded fonts when possible.
  • Run your file through KDP’s previewer and fix all warnings before publishing.

Quick FAQ

Does this calculator work for hardcovers?

No. Hardcover templates use different wrap and hinge measurements. Use KDP’s hardcover template generator for those projects.

Will this replace KDP’s official template?

It helps you size your cover accurately, but final validation should always be done in KDP’s official upload/preview workflow.

What if my spine text is off-center?

Double-check page count, interior paper type, and export dimensions. A small mismatch in spine width can shift text alignment.

Final checklist

  • Final page count confirmed
  • Correct trim size selected
  • Correct paper/interior type selected
  • Bleed setting matches your artwork
  • Full wrap dimensions match calculator output
  • KDP previewer check completed
