kdp size calculator

Amazon KDP Paperback Cover Size Calculator

Use this tool to estimate your full-wrap cover dimensions (front + spine + back) for Amazon KDP paperbacks.

Tip: KDP requirements can change. Always verify final dimensions in the official KDP cover calculator/template tool before publishing.

What is a KDP size calculator?

A KDP size calculator helps self-publishers find the exact cover dimensions needed for paperback books on Amazon KDP. Instead of designing only the front cover, you need a full spread that includes:

  • Back cover
  • Spine
  • Front cover
  • Optional bleed area

The total width changes based on your page count and paper type because those factors affect the spine thickness.

How KDP cover dimensions are calculated

1) Spine width

Spine width = page count × paper thickness

Different interiors use different paper thickness values. This is why a 200-page cream-paper book usually has a wider spine than a 200-page white-paper book.

2) Full cover width

Total cover width = (2 × trim width) + spine width + bleed allowance

If bleed is enabled, you add 0.125" on the left and 0.125" on the right (0.25" total).

3) Full cover height

Total cover height = trim height + bleed allowance

If bleed is enabled, add 0.125" to top and bottom (0.25" total).

Common trim sizes for Amazon KDP

Trim Size Common Use
5" × 8" Short nonfiction, journals, compact books
5.5" × 8.5" General nonfiction, workbooks, memoirs
6" × 9" Most popular for nonfiction and many novels
8.5" × 11" Textbooks, manuals, larger-format content

Best practices before uploading to KDP

  • Keep critical text away from trim and spine folds.
  • Use 300 DPI artwork for print clarity.
  • Double-check spine text alignment for lower page counts.
  • Export your print cover as PDF with embedded fonts.
  • Run KDP Previewer to detect layout and bleed issues.

Bleed vs. no bleed: which should you choose?

Choose bleed if your interior images or background colors extend to the page edge. Choose no bleed if all content stays inside margins and no elements touch the edge. Your cover design should match the interior bleed setting.

Frequently asked questions

Is this calculator accurate for all books?

It is a practical estimate based on common KDP thickness values. For final production, verify using Amazon's current template generator.

Can I use this for hardcover books?

This version is for paperback sizing only. Hardcover sizing uses different wrap and hinge measurements.

Why does page count change my cover size?

Because page count directly changes spine width. More pages means a thicker spine and larger total cover width.

Final note

If you publish regularly on KDP, using a quick calculator can save design revisions and reduce upload errors. Calculate early, design to spec, and always do one final check against official KDP templates before you hit publish.
