Korean Age Calculator

Use this tool to calculate your traditional Korean age (세는나이), your year age (연 나이), and your international age based on your date of birth.

Tip: leave as today, or choose any date in the past or future.

What is Korean age?

Korean age can mean different things depending on context. Historically, many people in Korea used the traditional counting system called 세는나이, where a baby starts at age 1 at birth and everyone gets one year older on January 1.

In practical terms, this means traditional Korean age is usually one or two years higher than international age. Since 2023, South Korea officially uses the international system (만 나이) in most legal and administrative contexts, but traditional age is still discussed socially.

How this calculator works

1) Traditional Korean age (세는나이)

This is calculated as:

  • Reference year - Birth year + 1

Your birthday month and day do not change this number in the traditional system.

2) Year age (연 나이)

Year age is a simpler year-based count used in some settings:

  • Reference year - Birth year

Again, birthday has no effect in this method.

3) International age (만 나이)

This is the globally common age system. You start at 0 at birth and gain one year each birthday.

  • If your birthday has passed in the reference year, your age is reference year - birth year.
  • If your birthday has not passed yet, subtract 1.

Why this matters

If you are filling out forms, applying for programs, registering for exams, or checking eligibility rules in Korea, always confirm which age standard is required. Most official uses now follow international age, but media, casual conversation, and family discussions may still refer to traditional age.

Example

Suppose someone was born on October 20, 2000, and the reference date is March 1, 2026:

  • Traditional Korean age: 2026 - 2000 + 1 = 27
  • Year age: 2026 - 2000 = 26
  • International age: birthday has not happened yet in 2026, so 25
