Find Your Personal Kua Number

Use this quick Feng Shui calculator to estimate your Kua number and best directions for work, sleep, and focus.

Note: Traditional Kua calculations depend on solar year turnover near Li Chun.

What Is a Kua Number?

Your Kua number is a personal Feng Shui number used in the Eight Mansions system (Ba Zhai). It helps identify directions that are typically considered supportive for prosperity, health, relationships, and personal stability.

People use Kua guidance to choose:

  • the direction of their desk while working,
  • sleeping orientation in the bedroom,
  • facing direction for important tasks like studying or planning.

How This Kua Calculator Works

This calculator uses the common modern method for birth years in the 1900s and 2000s. The process is:

  • Take the last two digits of the birth year and reduce to a single digit.
  • Apply different formulas for male and female calculations.
  • If the final result is 5, convert it to:
    • 2 for male
    • 8 for female

Because classical Feng Shui uses the solar year change near February 4 (Li Chun), people born between January 1 and February 3 may need to use the previous year. That is why the calculator includes a Li Chun checkbox.

East Group vs West Group

Kua numbers are split into two directional families:

East Group

  • Kua 1
  • Kua 3
  • Kua 4
  • Kua 9

West Group

  • Kua 2
  • Kua 6
  • Kua 7
  • Kua 8

In practice, East Group people usually benefit from East-family directions (N, S, E, SE), while West Group people often align better with West-family directions (NE, NW, W, SW).

How to Use Your Result

1) Workspace Setup

Try sitting so that your body faces one of your four favorable directions. For many people, this is the easiest and most practical way to test Kua guidance in daily life.

2) Bedroom Orientation

When possible, orient your headboard so your head points toward a favorable direction while sleeping. Small environmental improvements can matter more than major redesigns.

3) Decision-Making Ritual

Use your “personal growth” direction for journaling, planning, and study. Many people find this helps establish focus and consistency.

Important Notes and Limitations

  • This is a personal direction tool, not a guarantee of luck.
  • Home layout, clutter, lighting, and habits still matter greatly.
  • Different schools of Feng Shui may calculate or interpret details differently.
  • If your birthday is near early February, consult a professional chart for precision.

Quick FAQ

What if my Kua number is 5?

Traditional practice replaces 5 with 2 (male) or 8 (female). This calculator does that automatically.

Can couples with different Kua groups live harmoniously?

Yes. Most households balance practical comfort first, then optimize individual spaces (desk direction, side of bed, reading chair) where possible.

Does this replace professional Feng Shui consultation?

No. It is a useful starting point. A full consultation includes property orientation, floor plan, room usage, and time-based influences.
