What Is a Kua Number?
A Kua number is a personal number used in traditional Feng Shui to identify favorable and less favorable directions for sleeping, working, and arranging space. It is based on your birth year and gender (according to classical formulas), and it places you into either the East Group or the West Group.
People often use their Kua number when deciding bed orientation, desk direction, or even where to sit for focus and clarity. While Feng Shui is a traditional practice rather than modern science, many people find it helpful as a framework for intention and lifestyle design.
How This Kua Number Calculator Works
Step 1: Determine the Feng Shui year
This calculator can apply the common Li Chun adjustment: if your birthday falls before February 4, your Feng Shui year is treated as the previous year. You can turn this option on or off in the calculator.
Step 2: Reduce the birth year digits
We take the last two digits of the year, add them, and reduce to a single digit. Example: 1987 → 8 + 7 = 15 → 1 + 5 = 6.
Step 3: Apply gender + century rule
- Born before 2000: Male = 10 − reduced digit, Female = reduced digit + 5
- Born in/after 2000: Male = 9 − reduced digit, Female = reduced digit + 6
- If result reduces to 5, use 2 for male and 8 for female.
East Group vs West Group
Your final Kua number determines your group:
- East Group: 1, 3, 4, 9
- West Group: 2, 6, 7, 8
In classical practice, East Group people generally benefit from East-oriented directions, while West Group people are advised to favor West-oriented directions.
