m.c.m calculator

M.C.M (LCM) Calculator

Find the mínimo común múltiplo (M.C.M), also known as the least common multiple (LCM), for two or more integers.

Separate values with commas, spaces, or semicolons.

What is M.C.M?

M.C.M stands for mínimo común múltiplo (Spanish) and is equivalent to LCM in English. It is the smallest positive number that is divisible by every number in a given set. For example, the M.C.M of 4 and 6 is 12, because 12 is the first number that both 4 and 6 divide exactly.

How to use this calculator

  • Type at least two integers in the input box.
  • Use commas, spaces, or semicolons to separate numbers.
  • Click Calculate M.C.M to get the result instantly.
  • The tool also shows step-by-step pairwise calculations.

Why M.C.M matters

The M.C.M appears in everyday math and practical problem-solving, including:

  • Fractions: finding the least common denominator.
  • Schedules: identifying when repeating events align.
  • Number theory: simplifying divisibility and modular arithmetic tasks.
  • Classroom exercises: comparing rates, cycles, and periodic patterns.

Quick examples

Example 1: M.C.M of 8 and 12

Multiples of 8: 8, 16, 24, 32, ...
Multiples of 12: 12, 24, 36, ...
First common multiple: 24.

Example 2: M.C.M of 9, 15, and 20

A fast method uses GCD and pairwise LCM: LCM(9,15) = 45, then LCM(45,20) = 180. So the M.C.M is 180.

Three methods to find M.C.M by hand

1) Listing multiples

Good for small values. Write out multiples of each number until the first overlap appears.

2) Prime factorization

Break each number into primes, then take every prime with the highest exponent found: if numbers are 12 and 18: 12 = 22 × 3, 18 = 2 × 32.
M.C.M = 22 × 32 = 36.

3) Using GCD

For two numbers a and b: LCM(a,b) = |a × b| / GCD(a,b). This is efficient and scales well when repeated pairwise for many numbers.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing M.C.M (LCM) with GCD/HCF.
  • Stopping too early when listing multiples.
  • Dropping prime powers during factorization.
  • Entering decimals when the task expects integers.

Frequently asked questions

Is M.C.M the same as LCM?

Yes. M.C.M is the Spanish abbreviation; LCM is the English abbreviation.

Can I input negative numbers?

Yes. The calculator uses absolute values because M.C.M is typically defined as a positive quantity.

What happens if one number is 0?

The result is 0 for the whole set, since any multiple of 0 is 0 and no positive common multiple exists with 0 in the set.
