Example: 5 km on a 1:25,000 map = 5,000 m ÷ 25,000 = 0.2 m = 20 cm.

3) Scale from known distances

Scale denominator = Real distance ÷ Map distance (use matching units first).

Example: 3 km in reality appears as 6 cm on the map. Convert 3 km to 300,000 cm, then 300,000 ÷ 6 = 50,000 → scale is 1:50,000.

Common map scale formats

  • Ratio (representative fraction): 1:10,000

Important: If a digital map image is resized (zoomed, stretched, or printed at a different size), the ratio text may no longer be accurate. A graphic scale bar is usually more reliable in that case.

Reverse-engineering an unknown map

If 4 cm on the map equals 1 km in reality, convert 1 km to 100,000 cm and divide: 100,000 ÷ 4 = 25,000. The scale is 1:25,000.
