MAPEI Tile Materials Calculator

Estimate grout and adhesive quantities for your tile project in minutes.

Typical range: 1.55 to 1.80

Estimate only. Always confirm final coverage with the latest MAPEI technical data sheet for your exact product and substrate conditions.

What this mapei calculator does

This MAPEI calculator is designed to help you estimate how much grout and tile adhesive you may need before starting a project. Whether you are planning a bathroom floor, a kitchen backsplash, or a larger commercial tile installation, a quick estimate helps reduce overbuying and lowers the risk of running short mid-job.

The calculator combines tile size, joint dimensions, area, product density, and waste allowance to produce a practical shopping estimate in kilograms and bag counts.

What gets calculated

  • Grout required (kg): based on tile dimensions, grout joint width/depth, and grout specific gravity.
  • Adhesive required (kg): based on tiled area, average adhesive bed thickness, and adhesive density.
  • Bag counts: rounded up to whole bags so you can order realistically.
  • Waste-adjusted totals: includes your selected extra percentage for cuts, breakage, and site variation.

Formulas used in this estimator

1) Grout estimate

The grout model uses a common field formula for coverage in kg/m²:

Grout kg/m² = ((A + B) / (A × B)) × C × D × SG

  • A = tile length (mm)
  • B = tile width (mm)
  • C = joint width (mm)
  • D = joint depth (mm)
  • SG = specific gravity of grout

2) Adhesive estimate

For adhesive, the estimate is volume-based:

Adhesive kg = Area (m²) × Bed Thickness (mm) × Density (kg/L)

Because 1 mm thickness across 1 m² is roughly 1 liter, the math is straightforward and easy to audit.

How to use the calculator correctly

  1. Enter your total tile area in ft² or m².
  2. Input your tile dimensions in millimeters.
  3. Enter grout joint width and depth (or target depth).
  4. Use product-specific density values from your selected MAPEI data sheet whenever possible.
  5. Add a realistic waste factor (usually 5% to 15%).
  6. Click Calculate and review the bag counts.

Choosing a practical waste allowance

  • 5%: simple rectangular area, minimal cutting, experienced installer.
  • 10%: most residential projects (recommended default).
  • 12% to 15%: diagonals, tight layouts, patterned tiles, or difficult substrate conditions.

Common estimating mistakes

Mixing units

Area can be in square feet or square meters, but tile/joint values in this tool are always in millimeters. Stay consistent.

Underestimating joint depth

Joint depth has a large impact on grout quantity. If your tile profile or installation method changes depth, update this value.

Ignoring substrate flatness

Wavy surfaces often increase adhesive usage because installers need more material to compensate for variation.

Example scenario

Suppose you tile 200 ft² using 600 × 600 mm tiles, with a 3 mm joint width, 4 mm joint depth, and 10% waste. This calculator will convert area to m², estimate grout and adhesive mass, then round up to whole bags so your order list is ready.

That means fewer supply runs, better budgeting, and smoother installation planning.

Final note

This mapei calculator gives a solid planning estimate, but it is not a substitute for official product documentation. For best results, cross-check with the latest MAPEI technical sheets, especially for specialty adhesives, mosaic formats, large-format tile, heated floors, or wet-area waterproofing systems.
