Mbps to MB Converter
Use this calculator to estimate how many MB (megabytes) can be transferred at a given Mbps (megabits per second) speed over a specific amount of time.
How to convert Mbps to MB
The short version: divide by 8, then multiply by time.
Formula: MB = (Mbps × seconds) ÷ 8
Why divide by 8? Because network speeds are shown in bits, while file sizes are usually shown in bytes, and there are 8 bits in 1 byte.
Example
If your speed is 80 Mbps for 30 seconds:
- MB = (80 × 30) ÷ 8
- MB = 300
So you could transfer about 300 MB in ideal conditions.
Mbps vs MB: what is the difference?
This is one of the most common internet speed confusions.
- Mbps = megabits per second (speed)
- MB = megabytes (data size)
Internet providers advertise in Mbps, while your downloads and files are shown in MB or GB. The units are related, but not the same.
| Unit | Meaning | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Mbps | Megabits per second | Network speed |
| MB | Megabytes | File size / data transferred |
| MB/s | Megabytes per second | Download rate display in many apps |
Quick reference conversions
At 100% efficiency, these are common speed-to-throughput conversions:
- 10 Mbps ≈ 1.25 MB/s
- 25 Mbps ≈ 3.125 MB/s
- 50 Mbps ≈ 6.25 MB/s
- 100 Mbps ≈ 12.5 MB/s
- 300 Mbps ≈ 37.5 MB/s
- 1000 Mbps ≈ 125 MB/s
Why real-world results can be lower
Your actual transferred MB may be less than the theoretical value. That is normal. Common reasons include:
- Protocol overhead (TCP/IP, TLS, VPN encryption)
- Wi-Fi signal quality and interference
- Server-side throttling or distance to server
- Background traffic on your network
- Router or device limitations
That is why this calculator includes an Effective speed (%) field. If you usually get around 85% of your plan speed, enter 85 for more realistic estimates.
When to use an Mbps to MB calculator
1) Estimating download size over time
Want to know how much data you can pull in 10 minutes at 200 Mbps? This tool gives a fast estimate.
2) Planning uploads and backups
If you have a fixed upload window, use your upload Mbps and duration to estimate total MB or GB transferred.
3) Comparing internet plans

Frequently asked questions
Is MB the same as MiB?
No. MB is decimal (1,000,000 bytes), while MiB is binary (1,048,576 bytes). Both are shown in the calculator output for clarity.
Why does my browser show slower download speed than my plan?
Your ISP plan is usually in Mbps; browser download panels often show MB/s. Also, overhead and server limits reduce real-world speed.
Can I convert Mbps to MB without time?
You can convert to MB per second without time: MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8. To get total MB, you must include duration.
Bottom line
To convert Mbps to MB, divide by 8 and multiply by time in seconds. Use this calculator to get instant results in MB, MiB, GB, and MB/s, with an optional efficiency adjustment for more realistic planning.
