Estimate Your Overseas Military Compensation
Enter your monthly amounts from your LES (Leave and Earnings Statement). This tool estimates gross pay, taxes on taxable components, and net pay for your overseas period.
How this military overseas pay calculator works
Overseas military compensation can be tricky because some parts are taxable and others are not. This calculator separates your monthly income into two buckets: taxable pay (like base pay and many special pays) and tax-free allowances (like certain housing and cost-of-living allowances).
Once those amounts are entered, the tool applies your estimated effective tax rate to taxable income and returns both a monthly estimate and a total estimate over your selected overseas duration. If Combat Zone Tax Exclusion (CZTE) applies, tax on taxable pay is set to zero in this simplified estimate.
What to include in each field
Taxable components
- Base Pay: The monthly amount tied to grade and years of service.
- Special/Incentive Pay: Flight pay, sea pay, language pay, retention incentives, etc.
- Hazard/Hostile Fire Pay: Enter what appears on your LES for the month.
Tax-free components
- OCONUS COLA: Offset for overseas cost differences.
- OHA / Housing Allowance: Housing-related support when stationed abroad.
- Family Separation Allowance: If applicable for qualifying separation periods.
Example calculation
Suppose your taxable pay is $4,125/month (base + special + hazard), and your tax-free allowances are $2,300/month (COLA + OHA + family separation). Your gross monthly compensation would be $6,425. With a 15% effective tax rate on taxable pay, estimated taxes are $618.75/month, producing a net estimated monthly pay of $5,806.25.
Over 12 months, that estimate would be approximately $69,675 net. If CZTE applies, the same case would estimate taxes at $0 and a larger net amount.
Why this is useful before PCS or deployment
- Build a better pre-deployment budget.
- Estimate savings potential while overseas.
- Compare assignment options with different allowance profiles.
- Prepare for transitions back to CONUS where some allowances may change.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Mixing monthly and annual numbers in the same entry set.
- Using gross tax bracket instead of realistic effective tax rate.
- Forgetting temporary entitlements that may expire mid-tour.
- Assuming all special pays are always tax-free (many are not).
Frequently asked questions
Is this an official military pay calculator?
No. It is a planning tool designed for quick estimates only.
Can it replace my LES or finance office guidance?
No. Your LES and your local finance office are authoritative for exact pay and deductions.
Does this handle officer CZTE caps and every special case?
Not fully. The calculator intentionally stays simple. For complex tax scenarios, dual-entitlement periods, or partial-month adjustments, use official pay resources and tax professionals.
