ML to IU Calculator
Convert volume (mL) to international units (IU) using the concentration of your product.
We calculate IU/mL as: Total IU ÷ Total mL.
How to convert mL to IU correctly
The key point is simple: you cannot convert milliliters (mL) to international units (IU) without knowing concentration. Milliliters measure volume, while IU measures biological activity of a substance. Because of that, the conversion depends on what product you are using and how strong it is.
The core formula
Once concentration is known, the calculation is straightforward:
- IU = mL × IU/mL
If the label gives total IU and bottle volume instead of IU/mL, compute concentration first:
- IU/mL = Total IU ÷ Total mL
Why there is no universal mL-to-IU conversion
Different drugs, vitamins, and hormone preparations can have completely different IU concentrations. Even two products containing the same nutrient can differ by brand, formulation, or prescription strength.
- Same volume can contain different IU values.
- Same IU amount can require different volumes.
- The label concentration is always the deciding factor.
Step-by-step use of this calculator
- Enter the amount you plan to take in mL.
- Select how you know concentration:
- Direct: you already have IU/mL.
- Label method: you have total IU and total mL from the package.
- Click Calculate IU.
- Review the result and the formula shown.
Examples
Example 1: Direct concentration
You have 0.5 mL and the product is 2,000 IU/mL. Result: 0.5 × 2,000 = 1,000 IU.
Example 2: Label method
Bottle label says 30,000 IU in 30 mL. So concentration is 1,000 IU/mL. If you take 1.2 mL, result is 1,200 IU.
Example 3: Small measured dose
If concentration is 400 IU/mL and you measure 0.25 mL: 0.25 × 400 = 100 IU.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a concentration from a different product or old prescription.
- Confusing mL with drops, teaspoons, or syringes with different markings.
- Assuming IU conversion is the same for every vitamin or medication.
- Ignoring decimal points (0.1 vs 1.0 can be a 10× difference).
Important safety note
This calculator is an educational tool and does not replace professional medical advice. Always verify concentration directly from your current label and follow guidance from your physician or pharmacist. If a dose seems unclear, pause and confirm before taking anything.
