Final Exam Must Score Calculator
Enter your current grade, your target final course grade, and how much your final exam is worth.
How this must score calculator works
This calculator answers one practical question: What score do I need on the final exam to finish with my target course grade? It uses a weighted-average formula based on your current standing and the percentage weight of the final.
The equation used is:
Required Final Score = (Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight
Where final weight is converted from percent to decimal (for example, 30% becomes 0.30).
What to enter
1) Current grade before final
Use the grade currently shown in your class portal, excluding the final exam if the final has not happened yet. If your portal includes projected values, verify with your syllabus formula.
2) Desired overall course grade
This is your target end-of-course grade (for example 85%, 90%, or whatever you need for a scholarship, prerequisite, or personal goal).
3) Final exam weight
Enter how much the final contributes to your course total. Common values are 15%, 20%, 30%, or 40%. This is usually listed in your syllabus under grading breakdown.
Understanding your result
- 0% to 100%: Your target is mathematically achievable on the final.
- Below 0%: You have already secured your target grade, even with a zero on the final.
- Above 100%: Your target is not reachable through the final alone (unless extra credit or grading adjustments apply).
Example scenario
Suppose your current grade is 82%, your target is 88%, and the final exam is worth 25% of the course.
- Current contribution: 82 × 0.75 = 61.5
- Points still needed: 88 − 61.5 = 26.5
- Required final score: 26.5 ÷ 0.25 = 106%
In this case, your target is not feasible without extra credit or non-final grade changes.
Tips to improve your odds
Clarify grading details early
Some instructors curve exams, drop low assignments, or offer optional assignments. These details can move your required score significantly.
Set tiered targets
Instead of one goal, compute three: minimum acceptable, good outcome, and stretch target. This keeps planning realistic and reduces stress.
Backward-plan your study time
Break the remaining days into topic blocks, prioritize weak areas first, and include active recall practice (problem sets, flashcards, mock exams).
Frequently asked questions
Does this include extra credit?
No. This calculator uses the standard weighted formula. If extra credit is available, your real required score may be lower.
Can I use letter grades?
Convert letter goals to numeric percentages based on your course scale first, then use the calculator.
Why is my required score over 100%?
That means your target exceeds what is possible from remaining weighted points. Consider a lower target or ask if other grade components can still change.
