NZ Net Income Calculator (Estimate)

Use this calculator to estimate your take-home pay in New Zealand after PAYE, ACC levy, KiwiSaver, and student loan deductions.

Advanced settings

This is an estimate only and does not include every possible credit, allowance, donation credit, tax code variation, or payroll-specific adjustment.

How this net income calculator NZ works

This page is designed as a practical NZ take-home pay calculator. You enter your gross income and the tool estimates your net income using current progressive tax rates, plus optional deductions such as KiwiSaver and student loan repayments.

If you have been searching for phrases like “after tax calculator NZ,” “PAYE calculator NZ,” or “net salary calculator New Zealand,” this tool is built for that exact purpose.

NZ income tax rates used in this calculator

The calculator applies these resident income tax bands:

Taxable income band Tax rate
$0 – $14,000 10.5%
$14,001 – $48,000 17.5%
$48,001 – $70,000 30%
$70,001 – $180,000 33%
Over $180,000 39%
Important: Tax and levy settings can change over time. Always confirm final figures with Inland Revenue (IRD), your payroll team, or a qualified advisor.

What deductions are included

1) PAYE (income tax)

PAYE is calculated using the progressive tax bands above. The calculator taxes each portion of your income at the rate for that band, not all at one flat rate.

2) ACC earners' levy

The calculator optionally includes ACC levy. You can turn this on/off and adjust the levy rate and levy cap in Advanced settings.

3) KiwiSaver employee contribution

You can choose your KiwiSaver employee contribution rate (0%, 3%, 4%, 6%, 8%, or 10%). This amount is deducted from pay and shown in your breakdown.

4) Student loan repayment

If you tick the student loan option, the calculator applies a 12% repayment rate to annual income above the threshold (default set in Advanced settings).

How to use the calculator correctly

  • Enter your gross pay amount (before any deductions).
  • Select whether that figure is annual, monthly, fortnightly, weekly, or hourly.
  • If hourly, enter your average hours per week.
  • Choose your KiwiSaver contribution rate.
  • Tick student loan if repayments apply to you.
  • Choose the output frequency you want to see.
  • Click Calculate Net Income for full results.

Example scenario

Suppose your gross salary is $85,000 per year, you contribute 3% to KiwiSaver, you do have a student loan, and ACC levy is included. Your deductions can be substantial, and your final take-home pay may be much lower than your gross headline salary.

That is exactly why a dedicated net income calculator is useful for budgeting, planning rent/mortgage affordability, and setting savings goals.

Ways to improve your net financial position

  • Review your budget: focus on reducing recurring expenses first.
  • Increase earnings: salary review, role change, upskilling, side income.
  • Automate savings: move a fixed amount each payday.
  • Check deductions: make sure your payroll settings are accurate.
  • Plan annual costs: insurance, rates, registrations, and school expenses.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an official IRD calculator?

No. This is an independent estimator built to be quick and practical.

Does it include every tax credit and edge case?

No. It does not include every possible situation (for example, all rebates/credits, special tax codes, or certain payroll adjustments).

Can self-employed people use it?

It can provide a rough guide, but self-employed tax obligations differ from salary/wage PAYE. For self-employment, use dedicated accounting support or official resources.

Why does my payslip differ slightly?

Employers may calculate PAYE with payroll rounding rules and timing differences. Your exact tax code and pay setup can also affect results.
