How this New York paycheck calculator works
This calculator estimates your net pay (take-home pay) for each paycheck using your gross pay, pay frequency, filing status, and deductions. It applies a simplified model of payroll taxes commonly seen in New York:
- Federal income tax (after standard deduction estimate)
- Social Security tax (6.2% up to wage base)
- Medicare tax (1.45% plus additional Medicare above threshold)
- New York State income tax
- New York City resident tax (if selected)
Because payroll systems vary and tax law changes over time, this tool should be used for planning and budgeting rather than filing taxes.
What you should enter
Gross pay per paycheck
Use your pay before taxes and deductions. If your salary is annual, divide it by your number of pay periods to get paycheck gross.
Pre-tax deductions
These may include traditional 401(k), certain health premiums, HSA, or other eligible deductions. In this calculator, they reduce taxable income before income-tax estimates are computed.
Post-tax deductions
These are deducted after taxes, such as some insurance add-ons, union fees, or garnishments.
New York payroll taxes explained
Federal income tax
Federal withholding is progressive: portions of your taxable income are taxed at increasing rates. Your filing status affects both standard deduction and bracket thresholds.
FICA taxes
- Social Security: 6.2% up to the annual wage base limit.
- Medicare: 1.45% on all taxable wages, plus 0.9% additional Medicare above the threshold used for withholding estimates.
New York State income tax
New York has multiple progressive brackets. This calculator applies state standard deduction by filing status, then computes tax using bracket rates.
NYC local income tax
If you are a New York City resident, your paycheck may include local city income tax withholding. Non-residents generally do not pay NYC resident income tax.
Practical ways to improve take-home pay
- Review W-4 and IT-2104 withholding settings for accuracy.
- Use tax-advantaged accounts (401(k), HSA, FSA) when appropriate.
- Check whether your filing status and dependent information are current.
- Plan bonus withholding separately from regular payroll.
- Re-run your paycheck estimate after raises, job changes, or benefit updates.
