nic shots calculator

Nic Shot Calculator

Calculate exactly how many nicotine shots you need to hit your target strength.

What this nic shots calculator does

This calculator helps you work out how many nicotine shots to add to your vape liquid so you can reach a target nicotine strength. It is designed for common shortfill workflows, where you start with a bottle of e-liquid and increase the nicotine level by adding one or more shots.

You enter your current liquid volume, bottle capacity, current nicotine strength, target strength, shot strength, and shot size. The tool then tells you the exact milliliters of shot required, the number of shots, and whether your bottle has enough headroom.

How to use it

  • Current e-liquid volume: How much liquid is already in your bottle (for example, 50 ml shortfill).
  • Bottle capacity: Maximum volume your bottle can hold (for example, 60 ml).
  • Current nicotine strength: Strength of the liquid you currently have (often 0 mg/ml for shortfills).
  • Desired final strength: Your target nicotine level (such as 3 mg/ml).
  • Nic shot strength: Strength of each nic shot (commonly 18 mg/ml or 20 mg/ml).
  • Nic shot size: Volume per shot bottle (commonly 10 ml).

The formula behind the calculator

For a mix where you only increase nicotine by adding nic shots, the required shot volume is:

Vs = Vb × (St − Sb) ÷ (Ss − St)

Where:

  • Vs = nic shot volume needed (ml)
  • Vb = current base liquid volume (ml)
  • Sb = current base strength (mg/ml)
  • St = target final strength (mg/ml)
  • Ss = nic shot strength (mg/ml)

If Vb + Vs is greater than bottle capacity, your target is not possible in that bottle without transferring to a larger one.

Example

50 ml shortfill, 0 mg/ml to 3 mg/ml, using 18 mg/ml shots

Required nic shot volume is 10 ml. That is exactly one 10 ml shot, and the final volume becomes 60 ml. If your bottle is 60 ml, this works perfectly with no overflow.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting to check bottle space before adding shots.
  • Using the wrong nic shot strength from the label.
  • Confusing mg/ml with total mg of nicotine.
  • Assuming every result is a whole shot; many recipes require partial shots.

Safety notes

  • Wear gloves when handling nicotine liquid.
  • Keep nicotine away from children and pets.
  • Label mixed bottles clearly with date and strength.
  • Follow local regulations for nicotine concentration and sales.

FAQ

Why can’t I reach my target strength?

Usually one of two reasons: your bottle doesn’t have enough free space, or your target is too close to (or above) your shot strength.

Can I reduce nicotine strength with this calculator?

This tool is focused on increasing strength by adding stronger nic shots. Reducing nicotine requires dilution with zero-nic base or additional e-liquid.

Do I need to add full shots only?

Not always. The calculator gives exact milliliters and exact shot count. If you prefer full shots only, use syringes or graduated bottles for accuracy.
