Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA) Calculator
Estimate your monthly OHA, first-month total, and annual total. Enter all values in the same local currency.
What Is OHA?
OHA, or Overseas Housing Allowance, is a military housing benefit designed to help service members living off-base outside the United States. Unlike BAH, which is generally fixed by location and paygrade in the U.S., OHA is typically based on your actual rent up to a published cap, plus a utilities/maintenance portion and, in some situations, a one-time move-in allowance (MIHA).
Because OHA depends on several moving pieces, estimating your housing benefit can feel confusing. That is why this calculator focuses on the core numbers people usually need when planning a lease: your rent, your rent ceiling, your utility allowance, and optional MIHA.
How This OHA Calculator Works
This tool uses a simple estimate model:
- Reimbursable Rent = the lesser of your actual rent and your rent ceiling.
- Estimated Monthly OHA = reimbursable rent + utility/maintenance allowance.
- Estimated First-Month Total = monthly OHA + MIHA (if entered).
- Estimated Annual Total = (monthly OHA × 12) + MIHA.
To make planning easier for international budgets, the calculator also converts results to USD using the exchange rate you enter. If your exchange rate is set to 1, local values and USD values are the same.
Input Guide: What to Enter
1) Actual Monthly Rent
Enter the amount in your lease that you pay each month. If your lease includes optional parking, storage, or fees, use the amount that your command and housing office treat as eligible rent.
2) Rent Ceiling (Cap)
This is your maximum reimbursable rent for OHA. If your rent is above this value, the excess is typically paid out of pocket. If your rent is below this value, reimbursement is based on your actual rent.
3) Utility / Recurring Maintenance Allowance
Enter your location-based monthly utility/maintenance amount. This value is usually published and not tied directly to your actual utility bills.
4) MIHA (Optional)
MIHA is generally a one-time allowance tied to initial move-in costs overseas. If you are calculating a full first-year picture, include it; if you are comparing regular monthly budgets only, you can leave it blank or zero.
5) Exchange Rate to USD
If your housing market uses a non-USD currency, enter how many U.S. dollars equal one local unit. Example: if 1 local unit equals $0.82 USD, enter 0.82.
Example Scenario
Suppose your values are:
- Actual rent: 1,900
- Rent ceiling: 1,850
- Utility allowance: 620
- MIHA: 1,100
- Exchange rate: 1 local = $0.90
Since your rent exceeds the cap, reimbursable rent becomes 1,850. Estimated monthly OHA is then 1,850 + 620 = 2,470. First-month total including MIHA is 3,570. The annual estimate becomes 2,470 × 12 + 1,100 = 30,740.
Common OHA Planning Mistakes
- Ignoring the rent cap: a high lease payment can create monthly out-of-pocket costs even with OHA.
- Mixing currencies: always confirm whether values are listed in local currency or USD.
- Treating MIHA as monthly: MIHA is usually one-time and should not be added to every month.
- Skipping exchange-rate checks: changes in rates can impact your real spending power.
- Using old allowance figures: published amounts can be updated, so verify current values.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this an official military calculator?
No. This is an educational planning tool. Your official entitlement is determined by your command finance office, housing office, and current policy guidance.
Can I use this to compare two different apartments?
Yes. Enter Apartment A values, record results, then change rent and any other inputs for Apartment B. This makes it easy to compare monthly impact and first-year totals.
Should I include renter's insurance or internet?
Include only amounts that are considered eligible under your local housing rules when estimating reimbursement. For personal budgeting, you can keep a separate list of non-reimbursable expenses.
Bottom Line
A good OHA estimate helps you avoid housing surprises, compare leases with confidence, and plan cash flow before you sign. Use the calculator above as a quick decision aid, then confirm final numbers through official channels for your location.
