Part of Fortune Calculator

Enter your Ascendant, Sun, and Moon positions by sign, degree, and minute. Then choose whether your chart is day or night to calculate the Lot (Part) of Fortune.

Tip: If you only have whole degrees, leave minutes as 0.

What is the Part of Fortune?

The Part of Fortune (also called the Lot of Fortune) is one of the oldest calculated points in astrology. It is not a planet. Instead, it is a sensitive point derived from the relationship between your Ascendant, Sun, and Moon. Traditionally, astrologers use it to explore material flow, vitality, opportunities, and where life can feel naturally productive.

In practical terms, this point can indicate where your effort and timing align more easily with real-world outcomes. It is often discussed in natal chart interpretation, predictive astrology, and timing techniques.

How this calculator works

1) Convert each placement to zodiac longitude

Each sign covers 30 degrees. Aries starts at 0°, Taurus at 30°, Gemini at 60°, and so on. The calculator converts your sign-degree-minute input into a full 0°–360° longitude value.

2) Apply the day or night formula

  • Day chart: Part of Fortune = Ascendant + Moon − Sun
  • Night chart: Part of Fortune = Ascendant + Sun − Moon

This day/night switch is essential and is where many manual calculations go wrong.

3) Normalize back to 0°–360°

If the raw result is negative or above 360, the value is wrapped into the zodiac circle and shown in both decimal longitude and sign-degree-minute format.

Why day vs night charts matter

The Part of Fortune is rooted in sect logic: day and night charts are treated differently because solar and lunar emphasis flips. In a day chart, the Moon is added to the Ascendant and the Sun is subtracted. In a night chart, the Sun and Moon are reversed in the formula. Using the wrong sect can move the result into a completely different sign and house.

How to get accurate inputs

  • Use a reliable natal chart source for exact Ascendant, Sun, and Moon positions.
  • Use your accurate birth time whenever possible (Ascendant changes quickly).
  • Enter minutes, not just degrees, if available.
  • Confirm whether your chart is day or night by checking if the Sun is above or below the horizon.

Interpreting your result

By sign

The sign of the Part of Fortune describes style: how opportunities and tangible progress tend to unfold. For example, Earth signs may favor consistency and craftsmanship; Fire signs may favor courage and momentum; Air signs may favor ideas and networks; Water signs may favor emotional intelligence and intuition.

By house (advanced)

The house placement shows the life area where this point is most active—career, relationships, education, home, creativity, and more. For house-based interpretation, you need full birth data and house cusps, which are outside the scope of this simple calculator.

With aspects and timing

Many astrologers read the Part of Fortune alongside aspects from benefics/malefics and timing methods (transits, profections, solar returns). A strong transit to your Part of Fortune can correlate with periods of improved flow, visibility, or useful support.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using the day formula for a night chart (or vice versa).
  • Entering 30 degrees inside a sign (valid range is 0–29).
  • Ignoring birth-time accuracy for Ascendant-based calculations.
  • Treating the Part of Fortune as a standalone destiny point without chart context.

Quick FAQ

Is Part of Fortune the same as luck?

Not exactly. It is better understood as a point of alignment where practical outcomes can come more naturally when you act in tune with your chart.

Is this the same as the Part of Spirit?

No. The Part of Spirit uses a related but distinct formula and is interpreted differently.

Can I use this for compatibility?

Yes, as a secondary factor. Some astrologers compare one person’s planets to another person’s Part of Fortune for themes of support and growth.
