What is a patent bet?

A patent bet is a classic 3-selection multiple bet made up of 7 separate bets:

  • 3 singles
  • 3 doubles
  • 1 treble

Because singles are included, you can still get some return even if only one selection wins. That makes a patent more forgiving than a straight treble, but it also costs more because you are placing seven lines instead of one.

How this patent bet calculator works

This tool calculates a standard win patent. You enter:

  • Your stake per line
  • The odds for each of the 3 selections (decimal or fractional)
  • Which selections actually won

The calculator then breaks out the returns from singles, doubles, and treble, adds them together, and compares that to your total stake.

Component Number of Bets Pays When
Singles 3 Each winning single selection
Doubles 3 Any 2 winning selections
Treble 1 All 3 selections win

Patent bet formula

1) Total stake

Total Stake = Stake Per Line × 7

2) Return per winning line

  • Single return = stake × decimal odds
  • Double return = stake × odds A × odds B
  • Treble return = stake × odds A × odds B × odds C

3) Profit or loss

Profit/Loss = Total Return − Total Stake

Quick example

Suppose you place a £2 patent with decimal odds of 2.50, 4.00, and 1.80, and only the first two selections win:

  • Total stake = £2 × 7 = £14
  • Singles = £2×2.50 + £2×4.00 = £13.00
  • Doubles = £2×2.50×4.00 = £20.00
  • Treble = £0 (third selection lost)
  • Total return = £33.00
  • Profit = £33.00 − £14.00 = £19.00

Common mistakes to avoid

Confusing total stake with stake per line

If your stake per line is £5, your total outlay is £35 on a patent (not £5).

Mixing fractional and decimal odds incorrectly

Fractional 5/2 is decimal 3.50 (including stake in returns). This calculator converts for you automatically.

Forgetting that doubles and treble require multiple winners

A single winner triggers only the single line(s); doubles and treble need multiple successful outcomes.

Win patent vs each-way patent

This page calculates a win patent. An each-way patent is larger (14 lines), because each line is split into a win and place part. If you need place terms and each-way fractions, use a dedicated each-way patent calculator.

Responsible betting reminder

Betting should stay fun and controlled. Set a budget, track spending, and never chase losses. If betting starts to feel stressful, pause and seek support.
