Uganda PAYE Calculator (Monthly)

Estimate your monthly PAYE (Pay As You Earn) in Uganda using common resident or non-resident assumptions.

This is an estimate for planning purposes. Actual payroll outcomes can differ based on URA updates, exempt benefits, and employer payroll configuration.

What is PAYE in Uganda?

PAYE (Pay As You Earn) is the income tax deducted by an employer from an employee's salary each month and remitted to the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA). It is designed so employees pay tax progressively as they earn.

In practical terms, your gross pay is adjusted for allowable non-taxable items and pre-tax deductions, then the remaining taxable amount is assessed using tax bands. The result is your PAYE deduction.

Common Monthly PAYE Bands (Resident Individual)

Many payroll systems in Uganda apply monthly resident bands similar to the structure below:

Chargeable Income (Monthly) PAYE
Up to UGX 235,000 0%
UGX 235,001 to UGX 335,000 10% of amount above UGX 235,000
UGX 335,001 to UGX 410,000 UGX 10,000 + 20% of amount above UGX 335,000
Above UGX 410,000 UGX 25,000 + 30% of amount above UGX 410,000
Additional high-income layer Extra 10% of amount above UGX 10,000,000

How to use this calculator

  • Gross Monthly Pay: Total monthly earnings before deductions.
  • Non-Taxable Amount: Any exempt amount already included in gross pay.
  • Pre-Tax Deductions: Amounts deducted before PAYE is computed (where applicable).
  • Taxpayer Status: Select resident progressive rates or non-resident flat rate estimate.

Example

If gross pay is UGX 2,500,000, non-taxable is UGX 100,000, and pre-tax deductions are UGX 125,000:

  • Chargeable income = 2,500,000 - 100,000 - 125,000 = UGX 2,275,000
  • Resident PAYE = UGX 25,000 + 30% of (2,275,000 - 410,000)
  • Estimated PAYE = UGX 584,500
  • Estimated net pay after PAYE and pre-tax deductions = UGX 1,790,500
