How this PIP points calculator works

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) uses a points-based system to assess how a health condition or disability affects day-to-day life. This calculator helps you estimate your score by selecting one descriptor per activity for Daily Living and Mobility.

Each selected descriptor carries a points value. The calculator adds your points and shows whether your result is likely to be below threshold, in the standard-rate range, or in the enhanced-rate range.

PIP components and thresholds

Daily Living component

  • 0–7 points: Usually no award for Daily Living
  • 8–11 points: Standard rate Daily Living
  • 12+ points: Enhanced rate Daily Living

Mobility component

  • 0–7 points: Usually no award for Mobility
  • 8–11 points: Standard rate Mobility
  • 12+ points: Enhanced rate Mobility

Important reliability rules

When assessing descriptors, the activity should be possible reliably. That typically means you can do it:

  • Safely
  • To an acceptable standard
  • Repeatedly (as often as needed)
  • Within a reasonable time

If you cannot do an activity reliably under these criteria, a higher-point descriptor may be relevant.

Tips for a more realistic estimate

  • Choose descriptors based on your worst days and average days, not your best day only.
  • Think about whether you need prompting, supervision, physical assistance, or aids/appliances.
  • Consider mental health, cognitive, sensory, and physical impacts together.
  • Use consistent examples from daily life to support each selected descriptor.

Evidence that usually helps with a claim

A score estimate is useful, but supporting evidence is essential. Common examples include:

  • GP or consultant letters
  • Care plans and occupational therapy reports
  • Mental health team notes
  • Prescription history and treatment records
  • Statements from carers, family, or support workers

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculator guarantee my PIP award?

No. It is a planning tool. Official decisions depend on evidence, your form answers, assessment findings, and DWP decision-making.

Can I qualify for one component but not the other?

Yes. Daily Living and Mobility are scored separately. You can receive either one, both, or neither depending on your points in each component.

Should I get advice before applying or appealing?

Many people find it helpful to speak to a welfare rights adviser, disability charity, or local advice service for personalised support.
