Forex Pip Points Calculator
Calculate pip movement, points, pip value, and estimated profit/loss for a forex trade.
What is a pip point in forex?
In forex trading, a pip is a standardized unit used to measure price movement. For most currency pairs, one pip is 0.0001. For pairs where JPY is the quote currency (like USD/JPY), one pip is typically 0.01.
A point (often called a pipette) is one-tenth of a pip on many brokers. That means:
- 1 pip = 10 points
- 50 pips = 500 points
Why pip calculation matters
Pip math helps you evaluate risk before entering a trade. If you know the number of pips between your entry and stop loss, and you know your pip value, you can estimate your potential loss in account currency. That makes position sizing and capital preservation much more systematic.
Key benefits of using a pip points calculator
- Instantly convert raw price movement into pips and points
- Estimate pip value by lot size
- See projected profit or loss for buy and sell trades
- Avoid manual calculation errors under pressure
Formula used by this calculator
The calculator applies standard forex formulas:
- Pip size: 0.0001 (most pairs), 0.01 (JPY quote pairs)
- Price move: exit - entry (buy) or entry - exit (sell)
- Pips moved: price move รท pip size
- Position units: lot size ร 100,000
- Pip value (quote currency): position units ร pip size
- P/L (quote currency): pips moved ร pip value
How to use this pip points calculator
- Enter your forex pair (for example, EUR/USD or USDJPY).
- Select trade direction (Buy or Sell).
- Enter entry and exit prices.
- Enter lot size in standard lots.
- Select your account currency and add conversion rate only if needed.
- Click Calculate to get pips, points, pip value, and estimated P/L.
Example scenarios
Example 1: EUR/USD long trade
If you buy EUR/USD at 1.1000 and close at 1.1050 with 1 standard lot, the move is 50 pips. Pip value is about $10 per pip, so profit is approximately $500.
Example 2: USD/JPY short trade
If you sell USD/JPY at 150.20 and cover at 149.70 with 0.50 lots, the move is 50 pips (because pip size is 0.01 for JPY quote pairs). Your pip value is computed in JPY first, then converted to your account currency if required.
Common mistakes traders make
- Confusing pips with points
- Using the wrong pip size for JPY pairs
- Ignoring lot size impact on pip value
- Skipping currency conversion when account currency differs
Risk management reminder
A pip calculator is a planning tool, not a guarantee. Spreads, slippage, commissions, and execution quality can all affect final outcomes. Always use stop-loss levels, define your risk per trade, and keep leverage conservative.
