How the math works

Step 1: Build your modified non-crit hit

Your hit starts from base damage, then gets scaled by increased and more multipliers. Enemy mitigation is applied after offensive multipliers, and then effects like shock can increase damage taken.

Non-crit Hit = Base Damage × (1 + Increased/100) × (More/100) × Resistance Multiplier × (1 + Extra Damage Taken/100)

Average Hit (Landed) = Non-crit × (1 − Crit Chance) + Crit Hit × Crit Chance

Estimated DPS = Average Hit (Landed) × Chance to Hit × Hits per Second

Step 2: Blend crit and non-crit damage

If your crit chance is 40%, then 60% of hits are non-crits and 40% use your critical multiplier. This weighted average is what most players should compare when evaluating upgrades.

Step 3: Multiply by your hit frequency

Even small attack speed increases can beat large-looking damage bonuses. Always compare DPS, not only hit size.

Example use case

Suppose your spell has 1,000 base average hit, 250% increased damage, and a total more multiplier of 140%. You cast 4 times per second, with 35% crit chance and 300% crit multiplier, into a target with 50% resistance and 20% penetration. Entering those values gives you a practical estimate for mapping or bossing comparisons.

Now try changing one line at a time—for example, boost crit chance to 45% or raise more multiplier to 155%—and see which upgrade gives the strongest DPS increase per currency spent.

Common mistakes when evaluating PoE damage

  • Ignoring hit chance: Attack builds lose real DPS if accuracy is low.
  • Overvaluing increased damage: Too much additive scaling gives diminishing relative gains.
  • Undervaluing penetration: Against high-resistance enemies, penetration can be huge.
  • Comparing only tooltip damage: Tooltip often misses conditions and uptime realities.
  • Forgetting uptime: Flasks, buffs, and debuffs may not be active all the time.

Practical upgrade strategy

1) Raise your base first

Weapon quality, gem level, and flat added damage often create the strongest foundation.
