What is IV in Pokémon?
IV stands for Individual Values. These are hidden stat bonuses that make one Pokémon stronger (or weaker) than another of the same species and level. In Pokémon GO, each stat has an IV from 0 to 15:
- Attack IV - contributes to damage output and affects CP growth.
- Defense IV - helps reduce incoming damage.
- Stamina IV - increases HP and survivability.
A perfect Pokémon is 15/15/15, also called a 100% IV or "hundo."
How this Pokémon Calculator IV Works
This calculator adds your three IV values, compares them to the maximum possible total (45), then returns:
- Total IV score out of 45
- IV percentage
- Pokémon GO-style star band (0★ to 4★)
- A practical recommendation on powering up or saving resources
It is intentionally fast and simple, so you can check catches quickly before deciding whether to transfer, evolve, or invest Stardust.
Pokémon GO star ranges used
- 0★: 0-22 total IV
- 1★: 23-29 total IV
- 2★: 30-36 total IV
- 3★: 37-44 total IV
- 4★: 45 total IV (perfect)
When IV matters most
Raids and PvE
High IV generally gives a small but real edge over time. For raid attackers, high Attack IV is often preferred when choosing among similar candidates.
Great League and Ultra League PvP
PvP can be different. Because leagues have CP caps, many top-performing Pokémon actually prefer lower Attack IV with high Defense and Stamina (for example, spreads like 0/15/15). So "not 100%" does not always mean "bad."
Master League and long-term investments
In uncapped or high-cap contexts, near-perfect and perfect IV Pokémon become more valuable, especially for expensive power-ups and Elite TMs.
Practical strategy for trainers
- Use high IV Pokémon for expensive builds you plan to keep forever.
- Keep strong PvP spreads even if IV% looks lower.
- Prioritize species usefulness first, IV second (a top-meta 89% is often better than a weak 100%).
- Save Stardust for Pokémon that fit your battle goals.
Common mistakes
- Overvaluing IV too early: Level, moveset, and role often matter more.
- Ignoring PvP stat products: Some low-attack spreads are elite under CP caps.
- Spending on everything: Stardust is limited; pick key projects.
FAQ
Is 100% IV required?
No. It is ideal, but many non-perfect Pokémon perform extremely well in real battles.
Is a 3★ always better than a 2★?
Not always for PvP under CP caps. For raids and general use, higher IV is usually better if all else is equal.
Should I transfer low-IV Pokémon immediately?
Usually yes, unless they are rare, shiny, legacy-move, trade candidates, or useful PvP spreads. Always check role before mass transfer.
