Live Catch Probability Tool
Enter your battle details to estimate your capture odds per throw and over multiple throws.
This calculator uses the classic mainline catch-rate approximation (Gen III+ style behavior).
What this Pokémon catch rate calculator does
A Pokémon catch rate calculator helps you estimate the probability of catching a wild Pokémon before you throw your next ball. Instead of guessing, you can compare ball choices, HP levels, and status effects to make smarter decisions in battle.
The tool above computes:
- Single-throw success chance (your odds on the very next ball)
- Cumulative success chance over multiple throws
- Expected throws required on average
How catch chance is influenced
1) Base catch rate
Every species has a hidden base catch rate. Common route Pokémon are usually much easier to catch than legendaries. Higher base rate = better odds across every ball type.
2) Current HP vs max HP
Lowering HP is one of the biggest factors you control. Bringing a target into the red, especially down to 1 HP via moves like False Swipe, dramatically increases capture probability.
3) Ball modifier
Ball choice can change everything. Ultra Balls are solid general options, while specialty balls (Quick, Dusk, Timer, Net, Repeat, etc.) can outperform standard choices under the right conditions.
4) Status effects
Sleep and freeze offer the biggest status boost. Paralysis, burn, and poison also help. If you are shiny hunting or catching dangerous targets, reliable status support greatly improves consistency.
Quick strategy guide for better catches
- Open with a Quick Ball if available.
- Reduce HP safely (False Swipe is ideal).
- Apply sleep when possible for a stronger bonus.
- Switch to situational balls (Dusk/Net/Timer/Repeat) when conditions are met.
- Plan for longer battles: cumulative odds matter more than one throw.
Example use case
Suppose you are trying to catch a low-catch-rate Pokémon at 1 HP, asleep, with an Ultra Ball. Even if the single-throw chance is modest, 10–20 attempts may push cumulative success very high. This is why planning around total attempts is often better than focusing only on one throw.
Important notes
Game generation differences
Exact capture formulas can vary between generations and specific mechanics (critical capture, badge effects, level-based ball scaling, encounter context). This page gives a practical, high-quality estimate for common play.
Use this as a tactical calculator
Think of this as an in-battle decision helper: “Should I heal and keep trying Ultra Balls, or switch to Timer Ball next turn?” With real numbers in front of you, that choice becomes clearer.
