pokemon type calculator

Interactive Pokémon Type Calculator

Check move effectiveness and defensive weaknesses for any single-type or dual-type matchup.

Uses the standard main-series type chart (Gen 6+). Abilities, weather, items, and special move effects are not included.

How to Use This Pokémon Type Calculator

This tool is built to answer two common battle questions quickly: “How much damage will this move type do?” and “What is this Pokémon weak to?” Start by selecting an attacking move type, then choose the defender’s first type and optional second type.

  • Calculate Matchup: Returns exact type multiplier (0x, 0.25x, 0.5x, 1x, 2x, or 4x).
  • Analyze Defensive Profile: Shows all incoming attack types that your selected type combination is weak to, resistant to, or immune to.
  • Dual-type logic: The calculator multiplies both type interactions automatically.

Pokémon Type Effectiveness Basics

The type chart is a multiplier system. Each move has a type, and each defending Pokémon has one or two types. The game combines those interactions to get the final result.

Single-Type Matchups

A single-type defender is straightforward. For example, a Water move into a Fire type is 2x, while an Electric move into Ground is 0x because Ground is immune to Electric.

Dual-Type Matchups

Dual typing can create dramatic outcomes:

  • 4x weakness: Example: Ice against Dragon/Flying (2x × 2x = 4x).
  • 0.25x resistance: Example: Grass against Fire/Flying (0.5x × 0.5x = 0.25x).
  • Neutralized hits: A weakness and resistance can cancel to 1x.

Why a Type Calculator Helps in Real Battles

Even experienced players misread edge cases, especially in fast formats. A reliable Pokémon weakness calculator prevents wasted turns and helps with better switch decisions. It is also useful for nuzlockes, raids, and competitive ladder play where one mistake can cost the entire game.

Offensive Planning

When building move sets, check whether your team can hit common threats super effectively. Coverage matters more than raw base power in many matchups.

  • Have at least one answer to Steel types.
  • Carry options for bulky Water and Ground cores.
  • Do not rely on a single attacking type for all matchups.

Defensive Team Building

A balanced team spreads risk. If multiple teammates share the same 4x weakness, your opponent can exploit it immediately. Use defensive profile analysis to patch weak points before battles.

  • Avoid stacking identical weaknesses without a clear plan.
  • Include immunities (such as Ground immunity through Flying type) when possible.
  • Add resistances to common offensive types in your format.

Common Mistakes This Tool Prevents

  • Forgetting that Ghost is immune to Normal and Fighting moves.
  • Assuming all Dragon matchups are favorable without checking Fairy interactions.
  • Ignoring secondary typing when calculating expected damage.
  • Overlooking 4x weaknesses during team preview.

Quick FAQ

Does this include abilities like Levitate or Thick Fat?

No. This is a pure type chart calculator. Ability-based immunities and damage modifiers are outside scope.

Does this work for modern games?

Yes, it uses the modern 18-type chart where Fairy type exists (Gen 6 onward).

Can this replace battle sim testing?

Not completely. Use it as a fast reference for type effectiveness, then validate full strategy with speed tiers, stats, items, abilities, and move accuracy.
