Pokémon Type Effectiveness Calculator
Choose one attacking type and up to two defending types to calculate damage multiplier and matchup profile.
What this pokemon types calculator does
This calculator helps you quickly determine how effective an attacking move type is against a defending Pokémon’s type combination. It uses the standard modern type chart (including Fairy and Steel interactions) and returns:
- The final multiplier (0×, 0.25×, 0.5×, 1×, 2×, or 4×)
- A plain-language result (for example, “Super effective”)
- A full defensive profile showing which attack types the selected defender is weak to, resists, or is immune to
How type effectiveness works
Every move in Pokémon has a type, and every Pokémon has one or two types. Damage is adjusted based on how those types interact:
- 2× means super effective
- 0.5× means not very effective
- 0× means no effect (immunity)
For dual-type defenders, the game multiplies both interactions. Example: Fire against Bug/Steel is 2× × 2× = 4×. Ground against Flying/Electric is 0× × 2× = 0×.
How to use the calculator
Step 1: Pick the attacking move type
Select the move type you plan to use (for example, Water, Fairy, or Ground).
Step 2: Pick defender type(s)
Choose the defender’s primary type, then optionally add a secondary type for dual-type Pokémon.
Step 3: Click calculate
You’ll instantly see the damage multiplier and a compact strategic summary for that defender.
Why dual typing changes everything
Many key matchups are decided by dual typing. A Pokémon can gain extra resistances, gain a big weakness, or even cancel one weakness entirely.
- Water/Ground is immune to Electric, but has a 4× weakness to Grass.
- Dragon/Flying gains Ground immunity through Flying but remains weak to Ice.
- Steel/Fairy stacks many resistances and can be very hard to break.
Battle strategy tips using type data
- Use this calculator when building coverage moves on sweepers.
- Check likely switch-ins and target 2× or 4× damage opportunities.
- When defending, avoid stacking overlapping weaknesses on your team.
- Remember immunities: one immunity can completely shut down a move choice.
Quick reminder
Type effectiveness is only one part of damage. In real battles, factors like STAB, held items, abilities, weather, stats, and move power also matter. Still, type matchups are the fastest and most reliable baseline for better decisions.
