How this IVF pregnancy calculator works

IVF dating is different from a spontaneous pregnancy because your fertilization and transfer dates are known. In natural conception, pregnancy is usually dated from the last menstrual period (LMP). In IVF, we can estimate an IVF-adjusted LMP by counting backward from transfer.

  • IVF-adjusted LMP = transfer date minus (14 + embryo age in days)
  • Estimated due date (EDD) = IVF-adjusted LMP + 280 days
  • Current gestational age = today minus IVF-adjusted LMP

Why embryo age matters

If you transferred a day-5 embryo, that embryo had already developed for five days before transfer. That means your pregnancy is considered a little further along on transfer day compared with a day-3 transfer.

At transfer, gestational age is approximately:

  • Day-3 transfer: 2 weeks + 3 days
  • Day-5 transfer: 2 weeks + 5 days
  • Day-6 transfer: 2 weeks + 6 days

IVF week-by-week milestones (general guide)

Every pregnancy is unique, but these are commonly discussed milestones. Your clinic protocol may differ slightly based on your history.

Weeks 4 to 6

  • Beta hCG blood testing often occurs about 9 to 14 days after transfer.
  • Rising hCG levels are checked to confirm early progression.
  • Early ultrasound may begin around 6 to 7 weeks gestation.

Weeks 7 to 12

  • Heartbeat confirmation is commonly seen by this period.
  • Many patients transition from fertility clinic care to OB care around 8 to 10 weeks.
  • First-trimester screening and NIPT are often discussed around week 10 onward.

Weeks 13 to 27

  • Second trimester usually begins at week 14.
  • Anatomy scan is typically done near week 20.
  • Monitoring plan may vary depending on maternal age, prior history, or multiple gestation.

Weeks 28 to 40

  • Third trimester begins at week 28.
  • Growth scans and visit frequency often increase later in pregnancy.
  • Week 39 is considered full term, with delivery planning individualized by your care team.
