pregnancy likelihood calculator

Estimate Your Pregnancy Likelihood

Use this educational tool to estimate the chance of pregnancy based on cycle timing, contraception, emergency contraception, and age group.

Only needed for emergency contraception pills.

How this pregnancy likelihood calculator works

This calculator is designed to provide an estimate of pregnancy chance for a single intercourse event in one cycle. It uses timing relative to ovulation (fertile window), contraception effectiveness, emergency contraception timing, and age-related fertility trends. The output is an educational estimate, not a diagnosis.

1) Cycle timing and ovulation

The strongest driver of pregnancy chance is timing. In many cycles, ovulation occurs roughly 14 days before the next period. Sperm may survive up to 5 days in cervical mucus, so the highest likelihood is usually from about 5 days before ovulation through 1 day after.

2) Contraception method matters

The calculator adjusts the baseline fertile-window chance based on the method selected:

  • No contraception: no reduction in baseline chance.
  • Condom, withdrawal, pill: moderate to substantial reduction, depending on typical use.
  • IUD, implant, confirmed vasectomy: very large risk reduction.

3) Emergency contraception timing

Emergency contraception can reduce risk, especially when used soon after intercourse. Levonorgestrel generally works best the earlier it is taken; ulipristal remains effective longer; copper IUD insertion is the most effective emergency option in many situations.

Interpreting your result

Your result includes a percent estimate and a category:

  • Very low: less than 0.5%
  • Low: 0.5% to 3.9%
  • Moderate: 4% to 11.9%
  • Higher: 12% or more

These are broad ranges intended for decision support. Real-world outcomes can vary due to cycle irregularity, ovulation shifts, medication effects, missed pills, incorrect condom use, illness, and individual biology.

When to take a pregnancy test

A practical timeline is:

  • Test around 14 days after intercourse for an early check.
  • If negative and your period has not started, retest around 21 days after intercourse.
  • If cycles are irregular, serial testing and clinical guidance are often more reliable than one early test.

Important limitations

This tool does not evaluate symptoms, implantation bleeding, miscarriage risk, ectopic pregnancy, or STI exposure. It also does not replace medical care. If you have severe pain, fainting, unusual bleeding, or a positive test with one-sided pain, seek urgent medical care.

Frequently asked questions

Can this tell me for sure if I am pregnant?

No. Only a pregnancy test (and sometimes follow-up blood test or ultrasound) can confirm pregnancy.

Does being outside the fertile window mean zero chance?

Not zero. Ovulation can shift, and cycle tracking is imperfect, especially with irregular cycles, stress, travel, or recent hormonal changes.

Can I use this as birth control?

No. This is an informational calculator, not a contraceptive method. If avoiding pregnancy is important, use reliable contraception and discuss options with a licensed clinician.
